Hello Toby005,

After reviewing your post, it sounds like you are receiving a 0xE error when you connect the iPhone to your PC. I would recommend you use this article to help troubleshoot the issue.

When iTunes on your computer doesn't recognize your connected device, you might see an unknown error or a "0xE" error. If you do, follow these steps and try to connect your device again after each step:

  1. Make sure that your iOS device is unlocked and on the Home screen.
  2. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes that works with your computer.
  3. Check that you have the latest software on your Mac or Windows PC.
  4. Make sure that your device is turned on.
  5. If you see a Trust this Computer alert, unlock your device and tap Trust.
  6. Unplug all USB accessories from your computer except for your device. Try each USB port to see if one works. Then try a different Apple USB cable.
  7. Restart your computer and iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
  8. Try connecting your device to another computer. If you have the same issue on another computer, contact Apple Support.

I supported a customer today with this... had created a backup of his 6 plus and was trying to restore to a Xs Max.

After some troubleshooting we realized the following:

1. His iTunes was version 12.7 (it needs to be 12.9 so run apple software update to make sure its updated or download it from apple.com/itunes/download or from the Microsoft Store).

2. His Xs was running iOS 12.0 while the 6 plus had been backed up using iOS 12.0.1.

*ios backups can only be restored to devices running the same version OR NEWER.

once his iPhone was updated and we were using iTunes 12.9, the backup restored without a hitch

Install iTunes 12.9 if you haven't already done so.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

See also iOS device not showing in iTunes for Windows. It may help to explicitly update the device driver.

I have the same issue is Xs Max brand new phone.

tried to connect to 2 different PCs running W10 - get the same error from iTunes on both.

Older phones like 6 and 7+ are workign OK.

Apple support said i should call Microsoft as this is their issue. Would be still luaghing if it wasa not so sad.

Apples Support - can you advise what is going on????
