macOS Mojave battery drain

Just updated my OS to Mojave this morning and brought my laptop to work. It was on full charge when I left home. 2hrs after using it, the battery percentage was down to 40% which never happened before during any of my regular use. Also, the texts on the screen are blurry.

Just updating anyone interested... this worked for me and my battery is not losing any charge when in sleep mode:

- disabled TCP in sleep mode with this command: sudo pmset -b tcpkeepalive 0.

- changed the hibernation mode with this command: sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25 (the default is 3).

- disabled unlocking of my MacBook Pro with my iWatch (I read somewhere that was causing issues.).

- disabled transparency in Accessibility.

- turned off Dynamic Desktop.

My battery is back to normal (maybe even better) operation.

Over the last weeks I have tried several things to get rid of the sleep battery drain. Sometimes I thought it was fixed and then I would have another night where there was big drain.

Latest thing I tried is changing the hibernate mode setting to 25. Yes, it means there is a little lag in opening up the lid and getting going but overnight drain seems to be under control (I say seems to be - I need to give a few more days to see what happens). Tentatively optimistic, but I am disappointed in Apple and their response to this. I have never had an issue upgrading before but this time seems to have brought several problems.

Hi all,

please contact Apple support like I did. They need more information about this issue. As far as I know, apple is not monitoring this boards. As the name says, it’s an user community! I contacted apple support via twitter and after some chat session I got called from a really good senior advisor. So please please get in touch with Apple Support to let them know there is a real issue!

Best,

Ole

Hello guys, maybe some of you already figured out a sollution.

But I'm sure some of you still don't know how to fix the battery life dropping to 3-4 hours issue after updating to Majove. I tried this, and now my Macbook Pro Touch Bar 2017 is has about 10-10,5 hours battery life.

*Go/Go To Folder:

~/Library/Preferences

*from there find the file called:

com.apple.desktop.ini

*Delete the file.

I found this solution, after I tried something that an acient Macbook pro user did back in the 2012. I noticed that the article was from 2012, after I did every step. I thought I probably screwed up something without noticing by deleting a system file. But everything seemed alright.

So I charged my Macbook Pro to see how much battery life it would take overnight in sleep mode ( hybernation mode 3 ), which took only %2 during the night (6-7 hours).

And THE BEST: My battery life is dropped only %1 after using safari for 25 minutes ( and it says I have 10 hours more to go ).

To me all this doesn't make sense to be honest, since Apple managed to have the same issue way back then in 2012, because of the exactly same file. But I still would say, recover everything before you do this, I'm not an OSX pro after all, I don't know how this will work in earlier Macbooks.

This is the correct file name, i hope it works for you as well

You are still missing a letter "t": it is

com.apple.desktop.plist

Just to clarify, having this file is perfectly normal; everybody should have it.

However, it is possible that for at least some of the people affected, this file is somehow corrupted and therefore is causing the problem.

I would be interested to hear whether or not deleting this helps people.

Sorry for the double trouble, I was writing in haste while I was working meanwhile.

So as I understand, this file might be corrupted and that’s why some users have battery drain problems, while others have improved battery life?

Also just curious, when I deleted the file, did osx automatically replaced the file? Or how come osx still works without this file?

Sorry if I ask too much, again I’m just interested to learn about it

Mine MBP was also facing this issue after Mojave update. I was waiting since 15 days or so hoping this issue will be fixed automatically. But today I did following things and now it seems issue is resolved:

1. clean reinstallation of mojave

2. added Sd card to privacy to avoid indexing of it by spotlight. Also unchecked Film, Movie and Image option from spotlight indexing

3. Uses the following two commands as suggested in the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghtjOat0tKQ

The Commands for Terminal are

sudo pmset -b tcpkeepalive 0

sudo pmset hibernatemode 25

Now my MBP battery back is back to normal -around 9-10 hours.

I am using MBP 13" retina early 2015.
