macOS Mojave battery drain

Just updated my OS to Mojave this morning and brought my laptop to work. It was on full charge when I left home. 2hrs after using it, the battery percentage was down to 40% which never happened before during any of my regular use. Also, the texts on the screen are blurry.

Ok, so i solved this problem on my MacBook Pro 13'' (Early 2015). It turned out that battery drain was caused by fully loaded CPU (almost 100%). So, you can check this out, just open Activity Monitor (Finder - Apps - Utilities) and then look up for CPU tab. And then just watch which apps and processes uses your CPU. You can also check out other tabs and overall system and CPU load.

So it turned out that my CPU was used by the process called "qemu system x86_64 mac" and this was the reason my MacBook Pro had zero battery after about 3 hours after full charge. If you have the same process, just google the name of it and then you'll find the link to the thread on Apple Community on how to delete it (it's not that simple tho).

It really worked for me so my macbook works fine right now.

Hi there,

Just a short-term update after following dineckos suggestions (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8553128?answerId=33954586022#33954586022):

Now change the settings by these commands, one by one:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25

sudo pmset -a standby 1

sudo pmset -a standbydelaylow 60

sudo pmset -a standbydelayhigh 60

Results for my MacBook 12":

  • 12:01 a.m (midnight): 100% Charge, then unplugged with lid closed
  • 7 a.m. : still 100% carge - no drain over night :-)

Hope that experience helps someone - Kudos to dinecko! :-)

I've managed do downgrade back to high Sierra through a quite tedious process...

  1. First I reinstalled my MBP 2015 to El Capitan through recovery (CMD + OPT + SHIFT + R) on boot.
    1. Format drive to journaled
    2. Reinstall El capitan to drive
  2. Download high sierra from app store by following this link: Upgrade to macOS High Sierra - Official Apple Support
  3. Upgrade using the installer

I'm not sure if you can skip reverting to factory and just make a bootable usb from the High Sierra installer since I havent tested downloading High Sierra from Mojave. Not sure if the new app store allows downloading this installer.

Thanks for suggesting Citrix as possible factor. I don't have any Citrix products, so that's not involved with the Mojave wake-drain issue on my MacBook Pro. This thread now registers close to 3,500 clicks on "I have this question too;" I'm guessing the majority don't use Citrix, but it will be interesting to see how many say they do.

It's been 3 months since this post and the issue doesn't seem to be resolved. My battery drops by 30-40 % while the laptop is 'sleeping' overnight and drops significantly faster during regular use as well. The battery is not good to begin with so the device can hardly be called a laptop anymore. I have the 13-inch 2017 MacBook Pro model. Is there any OS update planned to address those problems?

what will happen is apple will tell you to bring the computer in and they will order you a replacement !! my computer was only 5 days old when I noticed that issue and at a same time that issue was only reason why i decided to buy new computer. And like you have seen number of people who viewd this thread... if 1 out of 100 gets a new apple computer for that reason imagine how much profit apple will make :) so just hang tight this has happened before too apple is known for practicing such marketing strategies.

Hello.

I am very very angry with Apple. The solution can not be a clean installation or return to High Sierra. I have a thousand options, virtual machines, database applications and configurations to export and it would take weeks to do so. A company like Apple can not give you this solution, you should get an update that solves the problem or this will be the last macbook that my company and I will buy.

I had not upgraded from Maverick until recently. Got Mojave, and my computer has started shutting down without warning, usually when the batter is in the teens. That seems to be a common complaint. Also, sometimes I have to reset time and day. One other thing. Now each time I start my computer I have to click on my name, give a password, and wait a while. Is there any way I don't have to do that every time?
