Can’t install Mojave due to a Fusion Drive SMART error
I tried to update to macOS Mojave, and when I tried to set the install location to my internal Fusion Drive, received an error message. The disk could not be selected for install, so I can't update.
This disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors.
This disk has a hardware problem that can’t be repaired. Back up as much of the data as possible and replace the disk.
I downloaded SMARTReporter-DEMO to see more SMART information, and the only error is on disk0, my Fusion Drive’s SSD component:
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
173 Wear_Leveling_Count 0x0032 098 098 100 Old_age Always FAILING_NOW 10355367086669Does this mean that my SSD is getting 98/100 percent of the way to its rated read-write count? Is it really going to wear out? Do I need to replace the hardware to update macOS?
I’d rather not use some hack to fool the installer, or whatever, but find an Apple-approved solution.
As background, I bought the Mac with a 1-GB Fusion Drive. When the spinning disk component failed, I paid Apple to replace it with a 3-GB disk. It’s been working fine as a Fusion Drive since.
