Can’t install Mojave due to a Fusion Drive SMART error

I tried to update to macOS Mojave, and when I tried to set the install location to my internal Fusion Drive, received an error message. The disk could not be selected for install, so I can't update.

This disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors.

This disk has a hardware problem that can’t be repaired. Back up as much of the data as possible and replace the disk.

I downloaded SMARTReporter-DEMO to see more SMART information, and the only error is on disk0, my Fusion Drive’s SSD component:

ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
173 Wear_Leveling_Count 0x0032 098 098 100 Old_age Always FAILING_NOW 10355367086669

Does this mean that my SSD is getting 98/100 percent of the way to its rated read-write count? Is it really going to wear out? Do I need to replace the hardware to update macOS?

I’d rather not use some hack to fool the installer, or whatever, but find an Apple-approved solution.

As background, I bought the Mac with a 1-GB Fusion Drive. When the spinning disk component failed, I paid Apple to replace it with a 3-GB disk. It’s been working fine as a Fusion Drive since.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)

I suspect that Apple has used SMART configuration figures pessimistically but none-the-less it is time to do one of 3 things: 1) take it to Apple and get the SSD portion of the Fusion Drive repaired 2) Separate the drives and pretend the SSD doesn't exist (I've linked to a Macworld article showing how to do that) or 3) replace the hard drive with an SSD. Option 3 would probably cost less than option 1 (though an Apple Store probably wouldn't do it) and option 2 would cost nothing.

I have no answer but do have a possibly related problem:

cannot upgrade to mojave, after fusion drive converted to apfs it contains errors that DU cannot fix. symptom is extremely slow operation, 2 minutes to type *one* password character to login. 10 minutes to actually login. it's as if the disk is retrying it operations a zillions times - exactly analogous to a disk with read errors and the attendant slow down.

I've tried the upgrade two times, having to restore from backup after each, so I know the fusion drive is OK. A complete upgrade / restore cycle on my 3 TB system takes about a day, so I've spent a lot of time on this 🙂

I've restored using a TM backup and and a Super Duper clone, to no avail. I've repaired the disk multiple times before upgrade, no errors reported at that time.

etc!

Thanks.

I’ll take the iMac to Apple and see what they offer.

I suppose I can separate the drives and try reformatting the SSD. Perhaps I can use the existing 128-GB drive as a startup disk, set it up as cache for Lightroom and Photoshop, or store the most recent portion of my photo library on it.

Looks like I can just put in a new SSD myself for about $75 USD or more, if I have to.
