Restart in Safe Mode then restart normally and re-test. Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support
Try resetting the NVRAM and then retest. Instructions are in:
Hi. Tried the reset a couple of times, but no luck with Desktop and Screen Saver crashing. Same result as before: "There was an error in Desktop and Screen Saver preferences." Any other ideas I can try? Many thanks.
I have the same problem. Disconnecting any external displays doesn't help and i've even tried putting the .saver files into one of the 3 /Screen Saver/ directories without any success. It seems like a permissions issue and is a frustrating one at that 😟
Thanks for the tip. Safe Mode sorted it out, but the problem recurs with a normal boot. Will start going through login items looking for conflicts tomorrow. Good night.
