iPhone 6s phone app freezes after iOS 12 update

The phone application (green telephone icon) on my iPhone 6s has become very flaky after updating to iOS 12. When I power on the phone, I can bring the app up, but it is totally unresponsive to touch and frozen on whatever screen (such as Contacts) I last left it on. The only solution I've found, when this happens, is to turn the phone completely off and back on, which usually makes it work properly again. Anyone else had this error and found a better fix?

Update: after talking with support, I reset all settings on the phone (Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings). This erases your passcode and wifi passwords, sets the default wallpaper, etc., but doesn't affect stored data like photos or music. After that, the phone app was working.

BUT...if I start changing the settings, such as turning on the passcode and using different wallpaper, the phone app periodically freezes again. I haven't been able to nail down yet precisely what setting change causes it.

So, my guess is that it's an iOS 12 bug, and a pretty serious one at that. Having reliable phone service is a pretty essential thing on a phone...

This problem has just occurred on my phone after upgrading to 12.0.1. After contacting support they talked me through a hard reset which fixed the problem. I found that just turning it off and on did not fix it.

The fix:-

1 Press both volume (+ & -) buttons and home button simultaneously and hold until phone shuts off

2 Wait 20 to 30 seconds

3 Power back on normally - you will see the Apple icon on black screen

4 When you see the log on screen - Enter your passcode

5 Fixed issue

There was no need to re-enter settings as these were all still correct in the phone

Restarting the iPhone is also one of the methods that can be used to solve this issue. All you need to do is long press the Sleep button and slide the slider to turn off the iPhone. Again long press the Sleep button to start your iPhone. If this does not help, you can also hard reset the iPhone. Here are the steps that you need to follow.

If you are using the latest iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or the 2017 iPhone X, 8, 8 Plus then:

Press the volume up and down button. Then, long press the side button till the Apple logo appears and the device restarts.

If you are using iPhone 7/7 Plus:

Long press the volume down and side button till the Apple logo appears and the device restarts.

If you are using iPhone 6s or earlier model

Long press the home button and the sleep button till the Apple logo appears and the device restarts.

I have the same issue. Apple Support was helpful with the hard reset solution which, temporarily fixed the Phone App freezing problem. Unfortunately, I continue to have the problem requiring regular hard resets (at least every other day). I haven't updated to iOS 12.0.1 as I read the problem persisted there for many. Let's hope that 12.1 addresses this major issue...

I also have an iPhone 6 Plus and it's been going berserk after iOS 12.0.1 Update. My iPhone is Opening Apps by itself, typing / entering letters and numbers in texts, freezes up, and generally completely frustrating the **** out of me. Is Apple aware of what's happening? Is there going to be a Solution? My iPhone has never been this messed up until now. I'm about ready to burn it in an incinerator!

I’ve had the same issues. Upgraded to iOS 12.0 and calendar started to freeze and wouldn’t sync, display calendar events, from my Mac (new Touch Bar 15” MacBook Pro) , even though connected to my Mac Upgraded to iOS 12.01. Did a phone restore and reinstalled backup. Still the same issue, calendar freezing.

Also unresponsive on apps including iTunes, cannot pause songs, it’s like the touch screen is not recognising touch commands.

Tried the hard reset suggested, i.e. holding both +/- volume buttons and home button simultaneously (more than 1min) and the phone doesn’t power off or hard reset. Any ideas please?

Same issue here with my 6S. Holding the volume buttons and home button simultaneously does not reset my phone. I have tried turning it off and on the usual way (power button plus home button) to no effect. Phone app remains unresponsive. I can make calls through Contacts, assuming I am calling a contact. Would love to hear from Apple that they are working on this giant bug, as I saw another poster having the same problem with an iPhone XS. I was thinking of upgrading but not going to if this problem persists.
