Mojave install hanging

I'm trying to install Mojave on my MacBook Pro Retina. The install starts, and continues for a while, and then hangs indefinitely with "about 15 minutes remaining". If I shutdown and restart, it brings up a Mojave window, but then nothing works: pretty much anything I try results in a persistent beachball, and it won't respond to anything (trackpad, keypad, force-quit shortcut, etc.). I tried shutting down and then reinstalling from my most recent High Sierra Time Machine backup -- that went through, although it deleted all items from the desktop, and Time Machine now shows Desktop greyed out for all previous backups (I can live with that, but it's weird). Trying the Mojave install again from that state just gets me the same result: partial install, hanging at "About 15 minutes remaining".

Help!

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, YaLinguist

If I understand your post correctly, you are trying to upgrade to macOS Mojave and the process seems to stall. Keeping your devices up-to-date is important and Mojave offers some great new features. I'd like to help.

To confirm, did you update with the steps listed in this article:

I have now spent a day and a half installing, reinstalling, reinstalling from Time Machine backup, resetting NVRam, trying both basic and upgrade install with and without all USB and Lightning devices disconnected, re-downloading the installer, etc. The closest I got was an install with everything disconnected that went to completion, and brought up a login page, but then the machine refused to acknowledge clicks or taps on the trackpad, so I could never actually log in. I've gone back to my last 10.13.6 Time Machine backup (from which still, oddly, everything on the desktop disappeared and doesn't appear in previous Time Machine backups). Life is too short to devote more of it to this, unless someone can provide an explanation of what's going on.

Machine: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3,

NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

It may be that "Tap to Click" has become disabled in the Trackpad preferences, but it should respond to clicks anyway. Maybe it needs time to do other tasks that have been queuing up. Remember that Desktop and Documents have become part of iCloud Drive, so once you can get logged in, you can make sure also that iCloud is enabled and then files will re-download from there.
