Does iTunes still back up the apps even though...

... you can't manage them any longer?

I need to backup my current phone so that I can restore to my new phone. Will an itunes backup suffice or do I need to do an icloud backup, where I don't have that much space available?

iTunes never backed up apps. You could transfer the apps into iTunes on your computer, and then sync them back, but they weren't actually contained in the backup. If you restore an iTunes backup, make sure that you are connected to WiFi until the process completes because your apps will download from the cloud when you restore the backup.

If you want to restore passwords and health data, encrypt the backup but do NOT forget the password. You can read about in the support article.

I went with the icloud backup and now I plug in my new phone and itunes says there is an update required, but none shows up on the imac or the iphone. So I disconnect the iphone and close itunes. Restart itunes and when I plug in the iphone it does not show in itunes. The old phone will show up in itunes.

BTW the new iphone is the Max if that has any bearing on this.

I was on the beta for ios 12.1, but am on the fully released version. I am connecting to my computer in order to restore the backup of the old phone to the new phone via the itunes interface. There is no update available on the old phone either.

EDIT/Correction

On the old phone it is on 12.1 and the new phone is on 12.0 No updates available on either per the app store or under general in settings.

OK, so it seems the disparity between 12.1 on the old phone and 12.0 on the new phone is an issue blocking restoring the backup to the new phone.

I either have to get the new phone on 12.1 or the old phone on 12.0. I suspect getting the old phone on 12.0 is going to be the route to take. How do I do that?

BTW I held the two phones close together and it started a setup process that I was not aware is available. So I am on my way expect for the ios version issue.
