SMS not working on Mojave

Since updating to Mojave, iMessage on Mac is no longer able to send or receive SMS messages. You get the red exclamation point. I tried signing out of iMessage on the Mac. And also toggling the Text Forwarding to device on the iPhone. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

After an hour of trying all these solutions... I found the solution!!

https://support.apple.com/guide/messages/get-sms-texts-from-iphone-on-your-mac-icht8a28bb9a/12.0/mac/10.14

Make sure both devices are logged into the same iCloud account. Then, on your phone, after setting up iMessage, click "Text Forwarding" and choose which device you would also like to send SMS messages on!

So Simple!!

Good for you! I still believe that this is something that requires an Apple fix -- all of the logging in and out, etc. is us unfortunates trying to fix a problem that Apple is responsible to address.

Anyway, "all's well that ends well". When iMessage is working properly it's wonderful.

Now, on to the next bug...we can expect them with complex systems.

We had to do NONE of this prior to Mojave/ iOS 12 and we shouldn't have to do it now. Workarounds are okay but for Apple loyalists (like most of us are), we deserve a fix that puts things as they were prior to these "upgrades".

I've tried every workaround in this discussion and am still unable to iMessage/ SMS text or otherwise from my Mac Pro (Mojave). My El Capitan MBP works just dandy.

Let's keep pressing Apple ladies & gents. Thank you.

I had this problem and read all the threads and suggestions, called Apple support who spent a lot of time with me.

At the end of the day however all it took was upgrading my iPhone to IOS 12.1 and it fixed the Macintosh problems!

It was on IOS 12.0.1

If you're on 12.0.1 an upgrade may very well fix your computer issues.

My iPhone is still on IOS 12.0.1 and the upgrade to the most recent version of Mojave (10.14.1) seemed to be the variable that fixed things for me. Obviously there is not a single fix that works for everyone (in this thread, at least). I'd definitely recommend starting with the more simple options (like updating iOS and/or OS) before trying the more elaborate processes (which I initially attempted to no avail).

Before you do anything else upgrade your phone to 12.1

I know it seems that it's Mojave, and why would the phone software impact the computer, but the simple act of upgrading my phone to 12.1 fixed this problem on two of my macintoshes, both running on High Sierra.

It may seem like this happened with Mojave, but 12.01 broke things. 12 did not. 12.01 did, then 12.1 fixed them.

Try it!

To be clear, my phone was already on 12.0.1 at the time I first upgraded to Mojave (I did not experience this issue running High Sierra). Within a day I attempted to text from my MacBook and every text I tried to send failed. I had tried the various, convoluted steps found earlier in this thread (logging out of all accounts, shutting down apps, etc.) and nothing worked (I had no problem texting from phone or iPad and, as these are how I most often text, I simply avoided using the MacBook for texting at this point). After I updated Mojave to 10.14.1, I tried texting and was once again able to send texts from my MacBook. My phone is still running 12.0.1 (I have not updated to 12.1).

Absolutely no harm in updating to 12.1 (that I’m aware of). I was only clarifying the changes I made that seemed to work for me, and updating the iOS on my phone wasn’t part of that. As I said in my earlier post, it seems that different adjustments have resolved this issue for various people. I just wanted to be clear that what seemed to work for me was getting the most recent update to Mojave.

I was only detailing my experience, not criticizing your suggestion. I’m glad that you were able to find a resolution that worked for you (and, hopefully, it will for others too).

The first thought that comes to mind is to reinstall Mac OS, either from a Time Machine backup (from a time when iMessages was last working), or a fresh internet install. You can also reinstall from the App Store. The processes are pretty well explained at these two sites (backup your Mac first, of course!):

https://www.imore.com/how-install-fresh-copy-macos

https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac/restore-mac-without-recovery-3636668/

I've reinstalled from the Internet option in the past without losing my files, etc. And frequently from Time Machine.

I was having the exact same issue for about a month, and what solved it for me was a tidbit from this old (2012) article:

http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/09/fix-imessage-syncing-between-mac-ios/

Key point: Go to Settings -> Messages -> Text Message Forwarding -- and make sure your Mac is selected to receive forwarded messages (mine wasn't, a new iMac). Now it all works as expected.

I'm running the latest OSes as of Dec 2018 (MacOS Mojave, iOS 12).

Go on your iPhone which supports SMS. Go to "Settings", then "Messages", then "Text Message Forwarding" then select other non-sms devices you'd like to forward SMS text messages to and from, this would be your computer and iPad or as applicable in your case.

I just updated hardware, and certain things like this need to be setup again... iCloud and Time Machine do a great job bringing things over, but certain things have to be set up again... such as licensing software, wifi calling, text forwarding, Mail Junk Mail filters, etc. Not all settings come over, since you could theoretically sill have the old device in play.
