SMS not working on Mojave

Since updating to Mojave, iMessage on Mac is no longer able to send or receive SMS messages. You get the red exclamation point. I tried signing out of iMessage on the Mac. And also toggling the Text Forwarding to device on the iPhone. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Mojave (10.14)

After an hour of trying all these solutions... I found the solution!!

Make sure both devices are logged into the same iCloud account. Then, on your phone, after setting up iMessage, click "Text Forwarding" and choose which device you would also like to send SMS messages on!

So Simple!!

Glad it worked for you. But I tried resetting text Message Forwarding a few times -- like around 100 times! This SMS text problem arose at about the same time that I upgraded to an Xs Max, a new MBP 2018, and updated to Mojave. I tried everything with the help of the Apple tech to no avail. I even powered up an older MacBook 12" that was still running High Sierra and the same problem occurred with that device. On top of that, I logged into my wife's iPhone, set up Text Forwarding properly, and still no luck.

I'm convinced it was a sync problem involving my Apple ID, the engineers found the problem and fixed it. I'd just like to know what the problem and solution was.

What worked for me and it seems others is changing the Send & Receive Options under Messages settings. I normally only had my cell number, but once I enabled my email addresses to also receive texts, it started working again for SMS. Once it started worked again, I disabled my iCloud email and just left my cell and it still works fine across my 3 devices. This seems to force a reset of some sort. I tried all the complete disabling and such, but I don’t think that helped.

I tried everything on this list... What finally worked was opening facetime on my Mac, signing out of icloud, and signing back in (in facetime). While I had done this multiple times in messages on MacOS and iOS, doing it in Facetime on MacOS seemed to do the trick. Hopefully when iOS 12.1 comes out tomorrow it will address this issue...

I spent many, many hours on this. First, on my own, and then in concert with a great Apple Level 2 tech. We spent so much time working on this, and she was so great, I feel like we're family!

Anyway, in the end the problem just went away. There's nothing on this discussion that we didn't try.

I bought my first Mac in 1984 (before some of you were born?). Don't ask me how much I paid, but it was as much as a used car at the time. This is the first time I've experienced a problem with my Mac in 30 years that has frustrated me so much. If 12.1 resolves the issue, great. But even if it does:

1. Apple will never admit that it was a problem.

2. The solution will never be announced. Because the was never a problem...

That's just the way it is...

I am sorry to say that I had SMS on my Mac working for the last week but two days ago I got the same issue return. Can receive but get the red exclamation mark regarding inability to send. I don't have any additional information to add as I have none. I tired all the usual stuff again and no success. I will go into the genius store; however, the last time I went in there for a different issue admittedly soon after the initial upgrade, I was told to wait for a future release. If I sort this I will let you know. A bit of a non-message I know but thought others may take comfort in not being alone on this one.

I remain auspicious that it has to do with the Apple ID and MacOS. I have three macs: an iMac (2014), MacBook (2014) and an MBP (2018). I had Mojave running on all three. SMS texting failed on all three. To test whether or not it was Mojave related (as I originally thought), I restored the MacBook to High Sierra from a backup, and still experienced the same SMS fault. So, if it's not Mojave, the only thing remaining IMO is a problem at the Apple server level with the Apple ID. Not syncing? The unfortunate thing is the trouble people are experiencing signing in and out of iCloud, etc. It takes a lot of time...

Maybe the update to 10.14.1 fixes the problem universally. It seems ot have worked for one previous poster.

My problem was resolved only after sending usage logs to the Apple engineers showing the exact time a fault occurred. I'm assuming they did something to fix my problem -- or it was some dirt in the carburetor that worked its way out on its own.

I called about the same problem and was told it couldn't have had anything to do with Mojave, and to flatten my Mac. Funny how it didn't start until just after I upgraded. Now the "save history when conversations are closed" is grayed out, and I have no choice but to have all messages active, or delete them permanently. Nice job, Apple.

On your Mac, go to Messages, Preferences. In the iMessage tab you'll see a box "Enable messages in iCloud". If that box is selected, you can't opt to select "Save history when conversations are closed" in the General section of iMessage preferences.

If you deselect Enable messages in iCloud you Mac will ask you if you want to dsiable on the Mac only, or everywhere.

If I choose to "Enable messages in iCloud", the option to select "Save history when conversations are closed" is greyed out. When I deselect Enable message in iCloud, then I can select "Save history when conversations are closed". It seems to be one or the other.

Is your "Save history when conversations are closed" greyed out all of the time. or not visible at all?

Nov 4, 2018 2:31 PM in response to rksmith10044

In my case... iMac, I have save messages in iCloud enabled, "Save history when conversations are closed" is always visible and greyed out. Sometimes I see all history, sometimes I don't. I find that conversation are saved locally in /Users/"my username"/Library/Messages/Archive/...

Always see my history on my iPhone.

Inconsistent and confusing.
