Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I just updated to Mojave and now, in Photos, when I have a thumbnail selected, hitting the space bar no longer functions to open (or later close) the image. This really inhibits my ability to quickly toggle into and out of images. I've seen a couple other scattered reports of this on the big wild web, but am wondering if anyone else here is experiencing it?

The spacebar is now used to start and stop videos - a video will play a preview in the thumbnail and I can start and stop it by hitting the space bar. It is now similar to iMovie, but to quickly open or close an image i have now to use the return key.
This worked after a restart and several closing and openings of the photos app

It was "hold Fn whilst pressing the spacebar" that did the trick :-)
That allowed me to put a spacebar in the shortcut field.

Thank you, Eric. It worked for me with Photos! Since it's now December and you posted this in October, I'm guessing Apple heard the cry for help :-)
Hi Eric in Boca! Before updating to Mojave 10.14.2 your shortcut workaround worked great on my iMac, but now it´s only possible to have a shortcut to open or to close, not both! **** nuisance!
😠 You're right, Ian. Now only the "Open" shortcut is working for me. "Close" is still defined, but it does no longer work. And the "Return" key is no disabled as well.
Just wanted to echo you. I came here specifically to see what was up. My space bar will only work for one or the other. More annoying that before. Ha. Any work around found? Thanks.

You're most welcome, Léonie! Using my Magic Mouse on my new iMac to close is an acceptable workaround for me, but I do hope Apple react to this problem! Ian.
This works to open the photo, but it will not close it. Am I missing a step? Thank you for the help.
Wish they had just gone back to the iPhoto scheme: The spacebar opens still pictures. And opens and starts video. Another tap on the spacebar stops the video. Couldn't be simpler.
The spacebar won't close the pic! I've tried all of the options in this list. :-(
