iPhone XS Max Unresponsive

I’ve been using my iPhone XS Max for 5 days. Yesterday, it had been sitting idle by the sofa for 45 minutes with about 65% battery. When I picked it up, it was completely unresponsive...the screen was off, it didn’t respond when I touched the screen, it didn’t ring when my partner tried to call it (went to voicemail) and the power button did nothing.

A hard reset brought up the apple logo and the phone started as normal. The logs showed ‘ResetCounter’ and bug type 115.

  • Has anyone else experienced this with their new device?
  • Is this likely to be a software or a hardware issue or is it impossible to say?
  • What was the likely cause?

I use my phone for work, including on-call work so major crashes like this would represent an issue. Thankfully, it’s only happened the once so far.

Thanks for any insights!

Exact thing happened to me this afternoon. I was using my Max at the office, set it down, and when I picked it up a few minutes later there was no response. It was dead, completely. It had about 65% battery so I knew it wasn't a dead battery. I tried the button (up vol, down vol, wake) reset and nothing. Plugged it up to a charger, nothing. Searched on the internet for a solution and found nothing except different button combinations for a reset. I took it to Verizon and the specialist also tried the button reset. Fortunately, he had his MacBook with him in the back office. He asked me if he could try hooking up to his MacBook. I agreed and when he plugged it in, it immediately rebooted back to normal.

I'm not sure what the deal was, but I have had many iPhones and have never had an issue like this at all. I'm a little concerned because I've only had the phone since Friday. He offered to swap it out (within 14 days of purchase) but they didn't have any XS Max 512's in stock and didn't expect any until mid-October.

I don't carry my MacBook around with me, so I'm afraid if it happens again I'll be stuck with no phone until I get home for the day.

Edit: just noticed you were at the same battery level as me.
