Opening a Numbers spreadsheet with Shortcuts App

I'd like to open and edit a Numbers file with a shortcut from my home screen. As far as I can tell Shortcuts only lets me specify a file (Get File) in the /Shortcuts folder. So I put my favourite spreadsheets in there.

However when I open the spreadsheet and edit it in Numbers (Shortcut: Open in Numbers) rather than saving the changes back it creates a new spreadsheet in the Numbers folder.

Any ideas?

I found that once i had opened a file multiple times, it showed up in the Siri shortcuts app as an option to open it via shortcut.

No need to copy it to another location. ( you might have to go turn on "Search, Suggestions & shortcuts" for numbers under the settings app-->Siri and Search--> scroll down to numbers and tap it.)

Its only use is to open it as far as i can tell, you cant automate anything else in numbers, which would be wonderful.

Add Siri shortcuts to home screen from app

I figured this part out,but it wasn't very intuitive.

Step one, from within the shortcuts app, you have to tap the share button (looks like a square with an arrow pointing up from its center), click Add to home screen. then follow the prompts.

This will then do something i didn't expect. It opens a page in safari that seems to have the same instructions again. I thought it was giving me the instructions for what to do in shortcuts app, like I hit help or something.

Nope that is the second step, you have to do it again from safari and save as a desktop shortcut from its share menu. then it will show on your ipad/iphones screen and you can tap/hold/drag to the page you want it on.

Run shortcut from siri shortcuts app

to run one of the shortcuts you have made in the shortcuts app it depends on where you are in the app.

If you are editing a shortcut script, there is a play triangle button under the name of the script at the top. (tap done to go back to the library screen)

If you are at the Library screen, tap the center of the rectangle that represents your script. (tap the three dots in the top right to edit the script)

Thanks Jason

That bit I had worked out. But what I am completely stumped with is:

√ you open the spreadsheet several times

√ Settings, Siri takes the hint and lets you create a Siri shortcut "Hey Siri, open XYZ"

√ You can invoke that by voice

- but how can you get it inside the Shortcuts App in order to add it to the home screen.

I can't see any way to run a Siri shortcut from inside a Shortcuts App shortcut. There appears to be two unrelated things called Shortcuts in iOS12
