An internal Messages error occurred. (tried everything)

This occurred when I upgraded to Mojave. Given that I have not seen similar Mojave-related complaints, but have also seen complaints about this with previous OSs I am gonna assume this isn't a problem specific to Mojave, but not sure.

Nearly every time I open Messages I get the error pictured below "An internal Messages error occurred. There was a problem with Messages. You need to quit and open Messages again."

I can usually get it to open if I go through this a couple times. But once I'm in messages, my conversations (which are synced to iCloud Messages) are not shown the same as on the phone. Commonly I will receive a message on my phone along with a notification on my Mac, but when I click it on the Mac, the conversation doesn't open in Messages, and I can't find it in the list.

I have deleted every iMessage preference file indicated on other forums, deleted library/messages, signed out of messages completely, disabled and re-enabled messages in the cloud on both my iPhone and Mac, and cleared my PRam for the heck of it.

Please send a (working) iMessage from the heavens and tell me what to do!!

Hi,

A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that can help after a macOS update or upgrade.

To start up in safe mode:

  1. Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The Apple logo appears on your display. If you don't see the Apple logo, learn what to do.
  2. Release the Shift key when you see the login window. If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup.

Hopefully the internal message won’t appear.

Still does not work. I even emailed Tim.

Did some more digging today. All messages ARE synced locally under library/messages. But they are not shown in messages.

I even tried to remove all messages files + all database files. Force Tim to rebuild my messages. After 3+ hours for Tim to download 7 gig messages over a 300Mbit fibre line: Exactly the same issue.

Tim downloaded all messages and when I start messages I just see maybe 5% of the messages he have already downloaded. And when I restart messages I get "internal error restart messages".

This is 100% an OS/server issue. I have 5 Macs with exactly the same issue and if I use 10.13 there is no problem. Its 10.14 problem, but Apple and Tim does not care. Its a proven OS/server issue since if we remove all local files and let Tim rebuild the database, the exact same problem occurs again.

This is a disgrace for Apple. The sad thing is that we have no alternative and that is why Tim thinks he can do this. (well he can't IT and hiring doctors and actors will not solve iCloud that is a disaster and a OS that gets buggier and buggies because of "OS as a service")

Heck.. if I can get iCloud sync stop bugging out messages: why use iCloud when you can simply use a simple sync command from one computer to all other computers you use? Its just a small database and 4 folders with everything.

I have a long history of texts with my wife. If she quits messages on her computer and relaunches it, I disappear from the list of messages. If I send a text to her, my messages reappear intact. Obviously something about the iCloud sync is not working correctly. As long as Messages remains open on her Mac it works and you can see all texts. If the computer is restarted or Messages is quit in some other manner, back to the Internal error and my thread of texts disappearing. I'm guessing that there is some text somewhere in there that has a link to something that no longer resolves, but why can't Apple fix this??? On the other side, I have no issues whatsoever with Messages on my Mac, no Internal Error, no disappearing text threads. Why does it work for me but not for her? We have the exact same text thread on both computers. Very frustrating that 2 macOS updates have been released and this issue is still not resolved.

Following on from Michael's post - I've actually (for other technical reasons) re-installed Mojave twice & also fresh installed the whole system twice and what's more the latter at Apple's store by their technician (nothing wrong with my hard-drive apparently). After a day or so back comes the dreaded 'An internal error...'

This must definitely be an iCloud issue and its ridiculous that Apple after all this time hasn't arranged a fix.

I got a new MacBook Pro last week. 100% clean setup.

Yepp. "an internal messages error occurred" after I used sync with iCloud.

This is a server side issue on a product that many of us pay for (iCloud) and Apple simple are too incompetent to fix it.

Guess Tims masterplan is that 10.15 supports some iOS apps. Since iOS messages works = this is how they fix it on 10.15 for macOS with running the iOS app.

How hard is it to make a messages app when the data is stored in the cloud/and you therefore have a master-sync point? Its one of the most easy thing to do and somehow Apple can't fix it because of they do not care about their customers. 9 month with this issue. 9 /root: FSCK months!

I did something very similar to this but signed out of iCloud before deleting messages on my MAC. When I restarted messages, I too had lost all my history on my MAC, although I still had it on my iPad and iphone. It worked for a few days and then the dreaded failure occurred again. I do usually get the iMessages (blue) on my MAC but often if my MAC is sleeping or off, it misses the SMS (green ) messages. It sounds like this does not get resolved in this major release of MAC OS. Please post if you are getting ALL of your messages on your MAC and if the problem never comes back. I have about given up.

Ah yes, I followed every step outlined on the answer to this post:"An internal Messages error occurred" Problem

It doesn't seem like the Mac HD library contains the same files as the ones referenced in the user folder. I did find a folder under the system library titled Messages and tried moving it, along with the user library Messages folder to my desktop. Restarted and still had the error come up.

Is emptying the trash going to make a difference?

Sep 26, 2018 10:31 PM in response to dantaylr

If the folder message that you deleted from system library is still on the desktop , drag and drop again to the system library , it will automatically set up alphabetically at its default location .

Same way for the folder messages of user library , drag and drop into user library itself .

In case if it is deleted from the trash , then if time machine is set up that could help .

I have the same problem. It seems to happen when a sync is triggered. Notice if I don't receive a message, it won't error, but if I receive or send a message it then tries to sync. I don't get the error at first, but it I try to send another message, it tells me to enable the account and takes me to to the pref screen which shows the account already singed in and enabled. The only way to clear this, is to restart the app, at which point I get the error.

I have the same exact issue, and in addition notifications are also not working, regardless of the number of times I toggle the notification options for the app. I followed directions on another support thread related to this error (but not Mojave), to no avail. If this happened after upgrading to Mojave, could this be an issue with the OS or iCloud itself? The fact that I am missing messages is just super frustrating.

Nov 15, 2018 9:51 AM in response to dantaylr

I've been having the exact same issue since upgrading to Mojave and tried everything recommended online. I did a clean re-install, deleted library files, reboot in Safe Mode, yada yada yada. I'm just hoping that more people commenting on this thread will get apple off of their *** to fix the problem. Imessage is one of the main selling points for apple over Android and it'll be useless if it can't sync across other devices.
