An internal Messages error occurred. (tried everything)

This occurred when I upgraded to Mojave. Given that I have not seen similar Mojave-related complaints, but have also seen complaints about this with previous OSs I am gonna assume this isn't a problem specific to Mojave, but not sure.

Nearly every time I open Messages I get the error pictured below "An internal Messages error occurred. There was a problem with Messages. You need to quit and open Messages again."

I can usually get it to open if I go through this a couple times. But once I'm in messages, my conversations (which are synced to iCloud Messages) are not shown the same as on the phone. Commonly I will receive a message on my phone along with a notification on my Mac, but when I click it on the Mac, the conversation doesn't open in Messages, and I can't find it in the list.

I have deleted every iMessage preference file indicated on other forums, deleted library/messages, signed out of messages completely, disabled and re-enabled messages in the cloud on both my iPhone and Mac, and cleared my PRam for the heck of it.

Please send a (working) iMessage from the heavens and tell me what to do!!

Hi,

A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that can help after a macOS update or upgrade.

To start up in safe mode:

  1. Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The Apple logo appears on your display. If you don't see the Apple logo, learn what to do.
  2. Release the Shift key when you see the login window. If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup.

Hopefully the internal message won’t appear.

Yep. I've been having this problem since the inception of the Mojave Release back in October 2018. Almost a year now. It started up being the worst ever around the 20th of August or so, 2019. I can not open it at all without an internal error message and also the **** thing bounces on my screen all day long but opening it spells disaster. It's annoying to not be able to use it. I want to send messages from my compute, not my phone. I worked with Apple for weeks in trying to resolve the issue and it really got no where. We tried and tried and tried. I even got a gift card out of the whole thing, which goes to show you how long we were trying. It totaled about some 25 hours. I find the whole thing to be beyond frustrating. The whole thing with Mac is to make communication and computing...well, easy. This is a long lasting bug that quite frankly is inexcusable. In addition, somehow it affects my fingerprint recognition and it won't let me log in or use my finger print for logging into web sites. Again, very frustrating and extremely inefficient when it comes to the manufacturer of what should be the easiest machine in the world. Good luck. I'm always looking for the fix myself.

Thank you for these responses! You are a MILLION times more helpful than Apple Support. So is the bottom line that this is a software issue (Mojave 10.14) or a hardware issue (my new computer is screwed up and requires crazy modifications to function the way it should)? I can't decide if I should go to the store and attempt (fruitlessly) to get them to do something or should I just put my hopes on Catalina and wait it out?
