Will an update fix signal issues for XS and XS Max?

I bought an iPhone XS (for my wife) and XS Max (for me) on launch day. I’m now getting dropped calls (in places I’ve never dropped calls before), random undeliverable texts, poor LTE speeds (<1Mbps!!) and poor WiFi performance. Our older iPhone 6 and 7 Plus, which thankfully we still have, has better WiFi throughput in our house and gets a signal in all areas of the house. The newer phones lose signal in our bedroom sometimes, which is only 30 ft from the router. No more WiFi signal at our mailbox or even the front door. If an update will fix these problems, then I will wait. If not, or there are no guarantees, I will return them. We love everything else about the phones. We just need the cellular and WiFi performance issues resolved. Thanks.

Man att charged me the restocking fee (1st phone I returned) although after chatting with a CS rep it was credited to my account. To tell you the truth I had to go through 6 phones to get one that was working (Still slower LTE than my 7 and wifi 5GHz after 50 ft goes down to 1 bar from 3 but way better than the ones before it) 12.1 final version did nothing in reality to my wife's phone as it is still slower than my 7 on LTE (My work XS does 30+ mbps download whereas my personal 7 pulls 90+) and on our Gigabit internet took her 1.5 hours to update 10 apps because I left the phone in our room and closed the door (17 apps needed to be updated overall) but today because I could not return it anymore I went to an apple store and exchanged hers and seriously hers is now as fast as my 7 on LTE, well 75 mbps CONSTANT and has a stronger connection over wifi than my works XS and faster too. I have written this before and I know it is a hassle but maybe exchanging them again would work for you. I know there are many people here telling you to wait and wait and wait for another update, dude when you can't use your gps, nor make calls longer than 2 min because it drops, nor load pages consistently, you can't be waiting for an update.

I was two feet from mine when I was getting 18 Mbps down on my XS Max.

However, so was my iPad Pro, also running iOS 12, which makes me think it's a speed test/iOS 12 interaction in the case of that app.

Frankly, things have seemed snappier for me, but I don't see a way to change resolution when watching YouTube via Safari in iOS; YouTube app only?

For example, when I just pulled up Mail, content just immediately popped in; with iOS 11 and the X I had to wait a second or two for it to load.

Hey William. Yes, the video settings are in the YouTube app. By default, it’s set to Automatic, so the app chooses the resolution based on your download speeds. It’s now choosing 480p for me on the auto setting, which I guess is better than 144p. lol On a positive note, the videos are no longer pausing. The downside is the video is very grainy. Fingers crossed that whatever the issue is gets fixed before next Friday.

I am having the same issues. I have been using iPhones for years - just upgraded from a Verizon iPhone 7 Plus. I always got signal when friends with the same phone (on other networks) did not. Now I have the XS Max - Verizon - and I see times when my LTE goes from several bars to zero bars. I'm dropping calls in places I used to Never drop. Hopefully this is something that can be fixed with firmware instead of being a hardware / antennae problem.

That's certainly your choice. Just don't think Samsung and Android don't also have issues when they release a new OS. They have plenty and their forums are filled with grumbling people, believe it or not, complaining about screen issues, Wifi issues, Bluetooth Issues, Battery issues. I always find the threat to move to Samsung to be somewhat amusing. But it's your money and if Apple no longer provides what you need, by all means buy something else.

has anybody here tried the new 12.0.1? did It make your LTE performance/speeds better? I am seeing better speeds and connection over wifi, but LTE continues to linger around 1-2 sometimes 7 mbps download, while maps and other location dependent apps continue to be a hit or miss because they cannot even find where I am at. By the way, I did do a clean install with 12.0.1 and even replaced the sim again, but nothing. I just want more than 1 person saying his LTE speeds did indeed improve

I’m on att as well and while my WiFi got better with a replacement (6th) my LTE is not what it used to be with my 7.

It is not only here, rbrylawski is in every discussion forum confirming every issue is a software issue when he is not an engineer But wants you to be an apple engineer if you are writing something. What is a person doing on a discussion bashing and telling people they are wrong if you do not have the issue nor know what everybody is talking about? And his “help” is wait For a software fix.

Yes, Steve told people they were holding their phone wrong. I bet he truly regretted saying that.

This was another iPhone I never had reception issues with. I am in an urban city, where signal strength is rarely an issue. And with Wifi Calling, as long as I have a Wifi connection, I'm rarely in a situation where I need to worry about signal strength. Having been through that thread long ago, the uproar died down when they changed the signal strength meter on the phone. The thread just basically died soon after. It begged the question as to whether people were having a truly worse cell phone signal or were they bothered by seeing a signal strength which was graphically less than they had on a previous phone?

Now, before you get your dagger and sword out, this is not iPhone 4, so this may not present the same set of options Apple may have on the newer phones.

I just noticed that too - I was reading a cached copy and then went to it through email and got the same result you did. Sorry!

I’m not experiencing these issues with LTE, oddly enough. Solid enough signal and fantastic LTE speeds. My Apple Watch also has issues staying connected to this phone - did Intel do the Bluetooth chips in this device as well?
