Stacks by 'Kind' not working

Has anyone else got this issue?

When I use stacks on my desktop the OS just lumps everything together in a stack titled 'Other' even though I have Group Stacks By Kind turned on. What is the point of item stacks if it does not even work as it should.

The stacked items include three screenshots, two jpegs and three mov files.

Is this a bug and has anyone got any suggestions on how you think that I could get it to work as intended?

Thanks!

Successfully have this working on 3 Macbooks that were previously affected. The steps I took were as follows:

  1. Rebuild the spotlight index for the Desktop folder. How to rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac - Apple Support
  2. Wait 8 hours without shutting down or restarting; this allows the rebuild to complete without errors.
  3. Reset the NVRAM on the device. Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

I have this problem as well. I've noticed that it is not just the desktop stacks where all files are grouped in the "other" category, but also in finder windows when grouped by kind.

I've also noticed that spreadsheets (Numbers and Excel) will be grouped properly into their own stack, as will "Developer" kind files like plists.

But, PDFs, jpgs, Word and Pages documents, Keynote and PowerPoint presentations, and pretty much anything I use regularly are all grouped together under one "other" stack on the desktop (or "other" heading in a finder window).

I tried rebuilding the spotlight index, but that didn't help.

You can disable stack feature , uncheck the right check mark all screenshots will be scattered .

This is interesting. I don’t specifically use MB dot files repo, but I have tinkered with dot files previously and I know there were some added and or modified when I used to use a file sync program (pre-iCloud documents).

When I have some time I’ll have to take a look at the dot files I have on my system and see if I can remove any potential offenders.
