iTunes will not open because its "updating"

Every time I try to open iTunes on my MacBook Air a window with the Finder Icon pops up and says "You can't open the application 'iTunes' because it is being updated," and this has been happening for over a week now. How can I get into iTunes again or get it to finish updating?
