SIM card direction in iPhone Xs Max

The SIM card that came in my new phone was installed contact side up, and that is the only way a card will fit in the tray. I installed my old one in the same direction. The phone works, but I don’t know if it is using the SIM card or eSIM. Anyone know if that is the correct card direction for the Xs? It has always been contact side down before.
