Hello Jim,

Yes to following the instructions. Here is what I did. I backed up anything that needed to be backed up and un-peared my Tardisk and then re-formated it to HFS+ and named it TarDisk. (Then run FSCK if you feel the need). I then installed Mojave and got it up and running. (You do not have to do this first if you don't want to) Once it was up and running, I backed it up to a portable drive as my time machine backup. I then followed the steps on the Pear_TarDisk_Mojave.pdf.

Note: While you do copy the Sierra installer to a USB stick, you do not actually install Sierra. It is merely to change the structure of the file system back to HFS+ when Mojave has changed it to APFS. Once that is done, you go then restore your time machine backup of Mojave and everything works great. About the PDF...let me know how and I will send it to you.

Both me and my Son have the same config system and have the same TAR Disk. I had trouble with installing Mojave and I took it to the Apple Customer Service and got an Upgrade to Mojave with my TAR Disk. Initially it had a lot of hiccups - But now it's great.

In my Son's case - We took it to the center - But they could not do it ( Maybe Different Service Guy). Finally my Son took the Tar Disk out and installed Mojave by starting with EL Captain or whatever was the original OS. So we had 2 Tar Disks - One is working okay with me - While the other is a Waste sitting there... 350 US wasted.. I guess.

Since my wife's Macbook Pro was on High Sierra, the instructions given by Tardisk did not exactly apply. I struggled with it a few times, said, "The heck with it," and went to the Genius Bar, first removing her Photos Library since there was not going to be room for it without the Tardisk. The guy who helped us zapped the laptop back to factory settings, removed the Tardisk and installed Mojave for us.

Then I went home and finished the setup, restoring from a Time Machine backup. Then formatted the Tardisk as an external drive using Disk Utility. Then copied the Photos library from a portable hard drive to the Tardisk, which I had named New Outrigger. Then opened Photos while holding down the option key, which allows you to find the Photos library out on the external drive. There's plenty of room on the former Tardisk in case her iTunes library gets too big for the Macbook's SSD.

PS: Before going to the Genius Bar I made a backup with the Photos library and another one without it.

Tried to update a Macbook Air (mid 2012) with 256 gb on board and 128 gb tardisk. Disaster. I was stuck in a loop of install failures. I finally 1) used disk utility to create an image of my computer; 2) erased and reformatted the on board disk; 3) created a bootable install USB of Mojave from online instructions (forgot where I found them); 4) everything is pretty much okay, but now I have an expensive 128 GB SD card.
