How to digitize tape on a mac but to use on a windows machine

A colleague used his old tape-based camera. Now he asked me to digitize the tape with my mac.

He wants to edit the result with his Windows-computer.

How to do so that he can take a USB-stick with the videotakes to his computer?

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.5)

Most windows computers should have no problem with mov files, but since you are using FCP X it is actually very easy to produce a file that will play just about anywhere.

Put your imported content in a project, then do File->Share->Master File, then click Settings, and choose "Computer". This will produce an .mp4 file with the H264 codec.

A lot more information is needed.

First of all, what tape-based camera is this? What connection options does it have?

And what model is your mac?

It may be relatively straightforward or not, depending on the above information.

Mini-DV cameras connect via Firewire, so you need a cable and one or more adapters, depending. If it is an old analog camera, you'd need a digitizing device like Elgato VideoCapture (there are others), and corresponding software.

Hello Louis.

Thank you very much for your answer.

The camera is a Sony HDR-HC9. The connection with the computer is a Firewire-cable. Now I use an adapter and the Firewire-cable to connect that camera with my computer, an iMac (27-inch, late 2013).

When I import footage from the camera into FCP-X, the stuff is set to MOV. That format cannot be used bij a Windows-computer. So, what to do?

The computer of my colleague is very new. It has no Firewire input, nor Thunderbolt 2. He expects from me a USB-stick with the content of his videotape.
