WatchOS 5.0.1 battery drain

I've had my watch on for approximately two hours today and the battery has drained from 100% to 63% under normal wearing conditions. I updated the OS to version 5.0.1 last night and the watch has been on the charger ever since. As with most OS updates, I shut the watch off and back on as a secondary "reset". The battery was lasting at least two full days - often three - under 5.0.0 and earlier. I'm chalking it up to be something fishy regarding the 5.0.1 update.

I'm having the same issue with my Series 4 GPS. Prior to installing 5.0.0, the battery life was excellent. Right after upgrading to 5.0.1 and doing the normal reboot. The battery has been draining significantly faster. It's very noticeable and even without being active or using the watch at all. I've also noticed that while I'm at home connected to WiFi, the drain isn't at much, but as soon as I go outside WiFi range, i.e., at work, the battery drain returns. I did not have this issue with 5.0.0. In fact, I could open the Workout app and being a 30 minute "outside walking" workout without losing a single percent of the battery. That is not the case right now. 😟

I have problem with series 3 charging. I read that watchOS 5.0 caused charging problems so watchOS 5.0.1 was quickly released. I had no problems with 5.0, with 5.0.1 may watch died on the first day after updating. It now last the whole day, but while on the charge with a full battery it chimes about once a minute signaling a full charge. This gets really annoying at night so I have to take the watch off the charger.

So, perhaps I was a little premature to raise an issue or maybe it was just the software establishing a new battery baseline with 5.0.1. Either way, my watch has corrected itself over the last few days; I haven't done anything out of the ordinary other than restarting it once. Hopefully everyone else's will return to normal over a few charging cycles.

How many days did you wait? I bought my apple watch series 3 6 days ago and updated it 3 nights ago. I have notice that it drained faster than version 5.0 and while I was sleeping then it woke me up that I reach my goal. Funny and I was sleeping that time. So I called apple support and suggested to go on the store where I bought the item and ask for exchange. I don't really like going back to store and waste my time if it will fix the problem by itself. You said you restart it once and wait for few days. How many days? Does is still charge? Mine don't goes up and stop at 54% and this morning it was 49% and doesn't goes up.

I noticed it on Oct. 1 (update occurred on Sept. 30). I restarted it once on Oct. 1 immediately upon noticing the battery draining then again on Oct. 2. I had no issues yesterday, Oct. 3, and today the battery has performed normally: I've only lost 13% over the last eight hours, which is about par for the course.

Mine has always charged to 100%; it sounds like your problems stem from hardware rather than the software - or perhaps both? That is assuming everything else (charging cable, outlet used for charging, etc.) is working properly. Either way, I would listen to Apple Support and exchange the watch. They should have a mail-in option if there isn't a store near you.

Have you bought apple care for your watch? I bought apple care with mine and I asked for an express exchange and next day they process my request and after that the exchange watch arrived. With the courier service they used it is very fast and you don't need to go out from the comfort of your home. The package came with a returning package and tracking number so the service is very easy. Now my watch is working good.

So I did mail-in repair and because the store where I bought my watch was not successful with the registration of my apple care watch. Mail-in repair was not successful. They returned my watch but nothing change. They didn't repair my watch. I called apple support then I have requested an express exchange which was successful. Exchange watch arrived and I sent my watch. It is working good now.

My series 3 was fine also until 5.0.1 and now the battery lasts no longer than 12 hours. Did the usual restart, restore from backup and setup as a new watch. Took it into Apple and they ran some diagnostics on it. The battery is fine however as shown on in their report it states my watch requires an update. My watch and also iwatch app on my phone display the latest update??

I got my watch through my insurance company so have to contact them. 15 days out of warranty 😟

I am also missing a number of workout types in the list such as strength training. I was also missing open swim until I did another restore. Very strange

Has anyone noticed anything missing?

Hi. Mine was never goes up to 59% even I charge it until 5 hours. I was just scared to do more damage on the battery or charger so I stop. Did you buy your apple watch with apple care? If you did, you can request for express exchange. Chat with an apple support and they will give you further instructions. If you were not able to buy apple care for your watch. You can book a repair on your nearest apple service or book a mail-in repair so you don't need to go out from your house. They will pick it up and send it back to you. I had mine with apple care so I have my replacement watch and working perfectly now.

It is possible but I am sure they are working on it now. For now, for you to prevent further damage on your watch. If you are under warranty you can book a repair or diagnostic check on your nearest apple service or store. They will have an initial diagnostic check on your watch. If you have purchased your watch with apple care. You can do express exchange, that's what I did.
