The Mojave cannot recognize external hard drive.

I just installed macOS 10.14 Mojave system on my macbook pro retina display. The system is gorgeous and everything works perfect, until today, I found a problem:

when I plug in my external hard drive (Mac format) to my laptop, the system just cannot recognize it and the external hard drive just doesn't show on "Lacations" in my Finder.

Did anyone meet the same problem?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), macOS Mojave (10.14)

well, i had the same experience one day, when my external drives would not show up... via usb cable.. So i looked online and did all that malarky, finder - preferences, sidebar, etc..., app-disk utility-mount...etc.... ( And these elaborate re-boot and check everything strategies almost never solve any Mac problem i've ever had )

Then today i hovered the mouse in the sidebar of the finder window, just to the right of iCloud, and noticed that "hide" would appear with the mouse hover, and of course if you click "hide" the iCloud drive goes away and the hidden link now says "show"... it toggles.... Ok, so just below that, where Locations would be showing my external drives and stuff, the toggled INVISIBLE link was of course hiding everything, so i hovered there, clicked "show" and Voila ! all my externals were back again...

I don't know what made Apple create these INVISIBLE toggles, or what made my computer toggle it off in the first place, maybe a stray mouse click on my part... Anyway, try this, see if it solves the missing externals for you.

Paragon Software offers NTFS software for Macs. I've never used it but know many who have poster here do.

The iBoySoft is for exFAT, FAT 32 and FAT formats for PCs. The exFat would be the best selection since it allows for larger file sizes to be managed.

This web site lists a number of free NTFS software: https://iboysoft.com/mac-drive-manager/ntfs-for-mac/free-ntfs-for-mac-os-x.html

I don't know if they are Mojave compatible (maybe RolaringApps.com will know).

Sorry I did not see your reply until now. I had successful backups with my Seagate until the latest High Sierra update a few weeks ago. I need to post the video I found which may help some of you. It did not work for my model of Seagate. I’ll also post my info from Seagate because they admit it no longer works with High Sierra and obviously not with Mojave either.

Yes and despite what many write, this is a Mojave OS issue. I can take my external NTFS formatted drive and walk over to wires machine which still runs Sierra, and all works as it always did. Its not the cable, its not the drive format (sort of), etc., its that the latest Apple OS is altered and does not allow the same operations as the previous OS. Now you need a 3rd party app or program to read NTFS formatted drives...so much for touting the "Apples can run Windows etc.". Why Apple, must you always alter new OS in ways that make it less user friendly than previous in one way or another....

thank you for this tip. Not a technical person but managed to view in disk Utility that I have OS X extended but owners are 'enabled'. Cannot work out how to change this to 'ignored'. Am trying to continue using my WD elements external backup drive which worked well until I changed to Mojave. So frustrating for a non- IT knowledgeable person!

Old Toad, can you help me with this please?
