CarPlay Disconnecting - iPhone XS Max

Dear all wise and all knowing Apple Community 🙂

I recently switched from my iPhone 7+ running iOS 12.0 to an iPhone XS Max running iOS 12.0.

I have a 2018 Audi S4 with the latest firmware from Audi.

With the switch to the XS Max, seems that my Apple CarPlay will get into a cycle of disconnecting and reconnecting

every 30 seconds or so.

I tried reverting back to my 7+ and works fine.

1. Siri is enabled.

2. The USB Lockout is turned off on the XS Max. The 7+ had the lockout turned on

but made no difference in the XS Max toggling on or off.

3. Swapped the cables to the one in the box of the iPhone XS Max and USB ports

in the car. This had no impact on the XS Max recycling the connection. The 7+ is uneffected

business as usual.

Not sure if this is tied in with the authentication issue with the charger. I go over wired carplay and the 30

second increment is suspect as that is my lockout time on the phone.

Curious if others are facing this.

Thanks!

So I want to report back and say that so far getting this usb power meter and connecting the phone through it to the car has worked wonders. I haven’t had a power based disconnect since using it.

I have had it not want to work when starting the car once. I had to unplug the power meter and plug it back in a few seconds later and it started working again.

Once my phone connects to CarPlay, I don’t have any issues. I think I’ve driven for about 5 total hours since starting it. This solution is ok for a band aid but I expect way better from Audi/apple and I look forward to not needing to use this workaround.

For reference, 2018 Audi Q7/iPhone XSM 512

This is not a paid post, and feel free to check whatever products out that you want, but this is the exact unit I ordered:

Same issue since I got my XS Max. I’ve had to give up on using the USB port and streaming music over Bluetooth which is not my preference.

My only guess due to the message “power not supported” on the MMI screen is that the XS Max power output might be too high for the Audi? It’s really frustrating and I hope both apple and Audi find a solution fast. I’m tempted to switch back to the regular size XS.

Just want to chime in here and say that I am experiencing the exact same issue as others. I switched from an iPhone X to an iPhone XS Max a couple weeks ago. Never had a problem with my iPhone X and my wife’s iPhone X continues to work without any issues.

I have a 2018 Audi Q7, and iPhone XS Max 512.

Trying out the usb volt meter today and will see if it helps. This is highly discouraging though. Seems like everyone with an Audi is having this problem.

Has anyone reached out to Audi to report this issue? Wondering if they need to fix something on their side.

Also, is anyone a dev here running 12.1.1 beta? Wondering if any fixes are in the works on apple’s side.

Having the same issue with iPhone XS on Audi A4 2017. Even without CarPlay it randomly disconnects for 5-20 seconds, Audi shows "Connected device has a power supply problem and is not supported" iPhone X and iPhone 7 all worked like a charm (maybe this error was once or twice in whole year). Working through CarPlay does not change anything - disconnects the same as CarPlay enabled or as external Media Player.

Really shame, my Audi dealership was not able to help. Contacted Apple Support - they said it is a common issue, but no timetable on resolving.

No matter how big they are if someone repeatedly calls with the same issue someone else will be affected.

How do you know this is solely an Apple issue? Are you saying that every XS Max user is unable to use CarPlay with every vehicle? How do you know it isn't a joint issue with Audi/Apple? My CarPlay is working with my car, a friends XS Max is working with her car and another's is working with her Ford with CarPlay. Actually in her case first it was an XS Max then and XS. Both work.

But have you called back and gone beyond the Tier 1 support? If not I would recommend that you do so.

This is absolutely NOT restricted to Audi. Ive spent night after night in my Mercedes A class having exactly the same issue, trying to fix.... random disconnects... cut out through calls, all of which are extremely dangerous when you’re then fumbling around the centre console trying to fix!

just to throw into the mix I do not have an IPhone XS Max... just the iPhone XS

frustrated.... fed up.... and hilariously only way to connect to CarPlay in the 67 plate Mercedes is via the cable 😔

Same issue in my 2018 Q5, went from an iPhone 6 to an iPhone XS over the holiday. The cable I was using with my old phone and had zero issues with would cause a disconnect. I tried the brand new cable that came with my phone and I thought that solved it, until today when it would connect and then disconnect. I was starting to think something was wrong with my new phone, but I'm not the only one from the posts here. I've got to take my car in next week for service, if I hear anything from the dealer I will definitely update my post. Sounds like its an issue on Apple's end though from everyones posts.

Ok, so this improved the situation but isn't solid. I ordered the y-splitter as well, and so far so good after two days. One thing I've definitely noticed is response time is much faster. We all know that pause and wait when we wonder if the car has the signal... sometimes it connects and other times, nope. Well there's no doubt now, it's noticeably faster a connection. And that makes it feel more solid even if it's not. More will be posted later if there's something to report.
