CarPlay Disconnecting - iPhone XS Max

Dear all wise and all knowing Apple Community 🙂

I recently switched from my iPhone 7+ running iOS 12.0 to an iPhone XS Max running iOS 12.0.

I have a 2018 Audi S4 with the latest firmware from Audi.

With the switch to the XS Max, seems that my Apple CarPlay will get into a cycle of disconnecting and reconnecting

every 30 seconds or so.

I tried reverting back to my 7+ and works fine.

1. Siri is enabled.

2. The USB Lockout is turned off on the XS Max. The 7+ had the lockout turned on

but made no difference in the XS Max toggling on or off.

3. Swapped the cables to the one in the box of the iPhone XS Max and USB ports

in the car. This had no impact on the XS Max recycling the connection. The 7+ is uneffected

business as usual.

Not sure if this is tied in with the authentication issue with the charger. I go over wired carplay and the 30

second increment is suspect as that is my lockout time on the phone.

Curious if others are facing this.

Thanks!

So I want to report back and say that so far getting this usb power meter and connecting the phone through it to the car has worked wonders. I haven’t had a power based disconnect since using it.

I have had it not want to work when starting the car once. I had to unplug the power meter and plug it back in a few seconds later and it started working again.

Once my phone connects to CarPlay, I don’t have any issues. I think I’ve driven for about 5 total hours since starting it. This solution is ok for a band aid but I expect way better from Audi/apple and I look forward to not needing to use this workaround.

I have the same issue with CarPlay disconnecting in my 2018 Audi A4 Allroad. I have been visiting my Audi workshop aswell for some troubleshooting with no luck. They could only refere to miss match between iOS version and Audi MMI versions and advices me to wait for upcoming updates...if any...

I did a quick try of the above mentioned tip with flight mode but it didn’t work for me. I will try again...

One more thing, for information, is that I also have the Audi phone box with wireless charging of my iPhone 8 but when connected to CarPlay USB port but it still keeps disconnecting (regardless of wireless charging or not). It is getting very frustrated, since it is a neat function that only should work...

I’ve tried my phone in a Volkswagen Passat CarPlay system and it works flawless, makes me wonder if it is an Audi problem still?

2018 Q5. iPhone XS. Same issue. I get a max of 30-60 seconds of connectivity then the MMI tells me I have no compatible device plugged in. My phone is on the latest iOS (as of this date 12.1). Another thing I noticed is that when I switch the MMI to Media, there is a message on the screen about there being an issue with the power on my device. Disconnecting the cable and reconnecting gives me another 30-60 seconds then poof.. Same thing. Sad, one of the nicer features the car has with CarPlay and Waze on the phone.. Works GREAT! for 30-60 seconds. Hope this gets corrected soon. I also came from an iPhone 7 that worked perfectly.

I can also confirm, not every usb meter work. Purchased one from my local computer dealer but with this type plugged in my A4 allroad 2018 USB port, CarPlay doesn’t even start up. Phone will just charge...

Tried the tip with flight mode more thoroughly as well, with no luck. Keeps disconnecting CarPlay...

I will go and order the usb meter from amazon today. Hope it works until apple (or Audi) can solve this issue.

I have the iPhone 8, running on iOS 12.1.

I would imagine it’s bigger than only Audi as well. Though to be fair, I’ve not had this problem in a variety of vehicles I’ve used as a rental while traveling for work. I’ve not had the problem in any of these vehicles:

Lincoln Navigator

Ford Excursion

Ford Taurus

Ford Edge

Ford Mustang

Ford Escape

Dodge Challenger

Chevrolet Malibu

Chevrolet Cruze

Nissan Altima

Volkswagen Jetta

Volkswagen Golf

Volkswagen Touareg

Volkswagen Transporter

Alfa Romeo Giulia

Range Rover Evoque

Volvo XC70

Volvo V60

Volvo V40

Volvo XC60

Mercedes-Benz MLK350

Mercedes-Benz B180

Mercedes-Benz C300

Renault Talisman

Renault Megane

Citroën C4

Opel Insignia
