Alas. So much for the easy solution.

This list (https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/apps-work-macos-mojave-3678735/) might point you to some trouble spots among the big software contenders, but it's worth noting I have a pretty good spread of many of the apps listed there (CS5, Word 2011, etc), and none of them crash or burn, nor do they contribute to any slowdowns on my Air. The trouble I was having on my Mini appears to have been due entirely to a failing HD.

That is the next thing to check, by the way. Run Disk Utility on your drives and see if any of them report problems in the SMART status (bottom left of the table of info here):

User uploaded file

If it says anything other than "Verified", you'll need to replace the drive soon.

In addition to that, run over your Mac with a fine-tooth comb. If there's any third-party stuff loading in your system menu, or anything loading under "Login Items" with your user account, make sure it's up to date. Also, older software that was not cleanly uninstalled might have left something behind that's interfering with your system now — though tracking that down might be extraordinarily difficult.

Some third-party apps require you to disable SIP (system integrity protection) to install and run. If you don't remember ever booting to recovery and entering this command in the Terminal:

csrutil disable

…then you probably don't have any such software on your machine. Nevertheless, try loading Terminal (you don't have to reboot to do this) and enter this command:

csrutil status

If you see anything other than "System Integrity Protection status: enabled.", you'll need to boot to recovery, select Terminal from the Utilities menu, and enter this command:

csrutil enable

…Followed by a reboot. You can only enable or disable SIP from recovery. You can't do it from safe boot or even via sudo.

Among other things, SIP keeps permissions on files and folders what they ought to be. If those permissions get munged, some programs (and possibly macOS itself) might have trouble functioning.

Do you have a third-party peripheral, such as a keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, or some other hardware element? Confirm its drivers are up to date.

If you have Flash, make sure it's the most recent version. (Check it via the Flash Player item in System Preferences; if it's not there, you probably don't have Flash.) I got a system dialog today telling me the Flash updater daemon was 32-bit, not 64-bit, and so I needed to run an update (the default is for it to auto-update, but I turned that off years ago). Apps that have daemon programs like that, running in the background periodically, are likely suspects in quietly causing trouble in a largely-untraceable way.

Also, take a look at Font Book and see if there are any fonts listed that appear to be damaged or poorly coded. Problematic ones should show the yellow caution triangle next to them in the fonts list. Consider turning those off, or removing them, if there are any.

I've seen problems like software-extension incompatibility before, and it always results in unpredictable system performance somewhere. The trick always is finding out which program is the source of the problem. You've probably seen EtreCheck referenced in other posts in this forum. It might be worth running a report on your machine, seeing if there's anything noted in it, and removing the problematic software, if any.

if faulty ram was your issue, it's good you could swap it out ....

it makes me wonder what quality ram they use for the apple laptop lineup then ....

haven't been able to verify a memory issue with my hardware so far, though that doesn't mean there is no issue.

if it turns out that there is .... i wouldn't be returning to apple for a new laptop in the future - can't replace the ram or the ssd in new models.

for me, the type of things i use my computer for dont necessarily require much ram and i think im covered by my 16GB. although im not sure whether any apple apps are requiring much more than they used to (safari, for instance).

regarding 32 bit apps i would suspect they are not causing the freezing, but i could be wrong. speaking directly to this issue, its happened more often with safari than other things.

has anyone tried installing 10.14.4 now that its mainstream ? i’m staying away from anything newer than high sierra, since mojave wont let me keep hfs+.

i am noticing how the door is being shut on core features and functions macos used to support, without chance of letting legacy technologies coexist (file system, opengl, apf protocol, etc).

imo, a bad decision to proceed that way, but i am sure by the way apple reasons that its for their best interests.

i'm wondering if flash or java may have something to do with this. or SMB ... can't tell. it's kind of tough to use the internet with java disabled. and refraining from connecting to my network shares via SMB is also not going to happen.

but it is quite unbearable, especially for those who this happens all the time and depend on a dependable experience, if that makes any sense ....

i got 3 freezes out of nowhere yesterday, all within a period of a few hours.

as before, i'm clueless based on everything i've tried. the logs themselves do not log anything while the freeze is actually taking place.

with this thread going past the 20 page mark, i think it's time to take action in some visible way, such as bringing this to the attention of any tech site that will put this issue out there for all to see.

I do not suggest etrecheck because it is not in App Store

Actually, it is.

i very much doubt Apple knows the author is continually pushing to sell a product in communities - they likely believe it is still free. (i believe they do not allow software sales pushes in their community help forums, no other company i know of would allow it)

Actually, the developer is one of our long time and very knowledgeable participants.

etrecheck?

What is your question about this? Although EtreCheck is free, it does have in-app purchases available for people who want extra features. Etresoft, Inc. is far too small to handle international payments ourselves. We use Paddle.com for purchases in EtreCheckPro and Apple for in-app purchases from EtreCheck in the Mac App Store.

EtreCheck is in the Mac App Store. Please see babowa’s link above.

users cannot say for sure if the binary does not have viruses in it, nor can Apple help them - because it is not in the App Store.

Can users ever be sure that an app doesn’t contain malware? Users should do their own research before downloading or installing any software. Don’t assume something is safe just because it is in the Mac App Store.

However, if EtreCheck did contain malware, Apple could still help. For one thing, EtreCheck is available in the Mac App Store so Apple could just remove it. But even EtreCheckPro, which isn’t in the Mac App Store, is under Apple’s control. EtreCheckPro is signed and notarized by Apple. Apple’s Developer Agreement License agreement (see section 5.3) forbids me from saying too much about the notarization process. However, Apple can revoke EtreCheckPro’s Developer ID certificate and notarization token at any time if any malicious activity is discovered.

I cannot find the source code i cannot tell you if the binary is repeatable from the source or might contain viruses and that worries me. at one time the etrecheck author posted source however i no longer see it available.

The source code for EtreCheck version 3.4.7 is still available on GitHub if you wanted to look at it. But any versions of EtreCheck since then are no longer open source. However, even if you had access to the source, that would be a lot of code to review. It is about 66,000 lines of code now.

ETRECHECK used to be free. i very much doubt Apple knows the author is continually pushing to sell a product in communities - they likely believe it is still free. (i believe they do not allow software sales pushes in their community help forums, no other company i know of would allow it)

EtreCheck is still free, although it does have a Power User in-app purchase available. However, anyone recommending EtreCheck here in the forums would only be recommending its use for free. The free version will identify major and minor issues, generate a text-based report, and allow access to security features such as adware detection and removal. Generally, it is that text-based report that people here in the forums are asking for.

Originally, that text-based report was all that EtreCheck would do. But it turned out that people were using it on their own, without posting any reports here on Apple Support Communities, or posting reports in other forums and getting poor responses. So, I enhanced EtreCheck to better support those people who were running it on their own. But since that activity is separate from Apple Support Communities, I do charge for it.

And finally, I do not “continually” push EtreCheck here in the forums. I very rarely post a links to EtreCheck. Apple is well-aware of my activity here in the forums. I try hard to keep them happy. Generally, that is pretty easy to do as long as one abides by the Apple Support Communities Use Agreement - Apple Community, which I do, at least most of the time. 😄

just to point out a statement you made ....

it's not the file system (assuming you are using an SSD-based mac).

i recently redid my entire configuration (not restoring from Time Machine either), with High Sierra and HFS+ file system for the operating system fs. in addition, i do not use 3rd party externals like mice or something else.

i continue to have beachballs of death.

am also ruling out hardware in this issue, because as I type this reply I am loaded into Windows 10 (via boot camp), and my experience on the Windows side on my mbp has been much more stable and reliable (noted that i am also using 3rd party attachments via usb while in windows). in addition, i've tried my own battery of hardware tests as well as apple's rigorous 4+ hour test by the genius bar.

on a side note, i just noticed an issue with this forum, while typing my replies, the blinking cursor seems to disappear and trying to click somewhere in the text i'm typing - is not bringing it back.

my conclusion here is that apple has let performance and quality of their products slip over time. as if they've outsourced them to some 3rd parties half way around the world.

"if it is indeed an icloud bug in the os, why hasn’t it been widespread and far reaching, that’s another question i wonder about"

yeah that is a good question.

Maybe we have some kind of "special data" which fails - or notes with same titles which are somehow ill-indexed because of the similarity. But this is just a really vague thought.
