Alas. So much for the easy solution.

This list (https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/apps-work-macos-mojave-3678735/) might point you to some trouble spots among the big software contenders, but it's worth noting I have a pretty good spread of many of the apps listed there (CS5, Word 2011, etc), and none of them crash or burn, nor do they contribute to any slowdowns on my Air. The trouble I was having on my Mini appears to have been due entirely to a failing HD.

That is the next thing to check, by the way. Run Disk Utility on your drives and see if any of them report problems in the SMART status (bottom left of the table of info here):

User uploaded file

If it says anything other than "Verified", you'll need to replace the drive soon.

In addition to that, run over your Mac with a fine-tooth comb. If there's any third-party stuff loading in your system menu, or anything loading under "Login Items" with your user account, make sure it's up to date. Also, older software that was not cleanly uninstalled might have left something behind that's interfering with your system now — though tracking that down might be extraordinarily difficult.

Some third-party apps require you to disable SIP (system integrity protection) to install and run. If you don't remember ever booting to recovery and entering this command in the Terminal:

csrutil disable

…then you probably don't have any such software on your machine. Nevertheless, try loading Terminal (you don't have to reboot to do this) and enter this command:

csrutil status

If you see anything other than "System Integrity Protection status: enabled.", you'll need to boot to recovery, select Terminal from the Utilities menu, and enter this command:

csrutil enable

…Followed by a reboot. You can only enable or disable SIP from recovery. You can't do it from safe boot or even via sudo.

Among other things, SIP keeps permissions on files and folders what they ought to be. If those permissions get munged, some programs (and possibly macOS itself) might have trouble functioning.

Do you have a third-party peripheral, such as a keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, or some other hardware element? Confirm its drivers are up to date.

If you have Flash, make sure it's the most recent version. (Check it via the Flash Player item in System Preferences; if it's not there, you probably don't have Flash.) I got a system dialog today telling me the Flash updater daemon was 32-bit, not 64-bit, and so I needed to run an update (the default is for it to auto-update, but I turned that off years ago). Apps that have daemon programs like that, running in the background periodically, are likely suspects in quietly causing trouble in a largely-untraceable way.

Also, take a look at Font Book and see if there are any fonts listed that appear to be damaged or poorly coded. Problematic ones should show the yellow caution triangle next to them in the fonts list. Consider turning those off, or removing them, if there are any.

I've seen problems like software-extension incompatibility before, and it always results in unpredictable system performance somewhere. The trick always is finding out which program is the source of the problem. You've probably seen EtreCheck referenced in other posts in this forum. It might be worth running a report on your machine, seeing if there's anything noted in it, and removing the problematic software, if any.

regarding 3rd parties in general, shortly after i picked up my mbp from the apple store (with a fresh slate restored ssd, running mojave) .... i encountered the beachball of death with no additional software installed.

so my thoughts are that 3rd party apps are not the source of my issue. otherwise, id expect to have more frequent issues when i use those apps.

this discussion is much like the placebo effect, with everyone trying different things and believing the problem was eradicated by the action.

still running without icloud integrations and signed out of icloud on the mbp.

that reminds me of my days back when i used android - no syncing to common apps on the computer.

if it is indeed an icloud bug in the os, why hasn’t it been widespread and far reaching, that’s another question i wonder about.

your guess is as good as mine @ this point.

just because bt5 supersedes bt4, people with bt4 hardware shouldnt be left in the cold with something that broke during the transition.

following that logic, seems there are leftovers/artifacts that should have been cleaned up, on the software end - as apple evolved things.

sounds like im off on a tangent, though it shouldnt be the users headache to deal with issues that break after changes.

part of the apple experience, i guess.

Hi I'm Using the MacBook pro early 2015 and faced exactly the same issue. This started after MacOS update from 10.14.1 to 10.14.4

My trackpad and key board stop working ,the entire screen freezes and stops working.

I tried a hard reset of the VRAm but still the keyboard and the mouse would not work.

So i got a wireless mouse and a wired usb keyboard and on start up used them to get into recovery mode and used the TIME MACHINE backup to rest the system and viola everything started working.

updated my OS again and again had exactly the same problem but this time the mouse and keyboard were working for some time but the system started freezing and became totally unresponsive, even though the cursor was moving.

So i have again Gone back to the previous update using TIME Machine backup and everything if fine .Been using the system now for three days without a hitch.

Something in my system and the new update are not compatible ...i guess.

i was able to restore the macOS partition from my tm backup, it seems things are running good so far.

following that, i ran du on my macOS installation, as well running some of the tests in tech tool pro to make sure the volumes check out ok.

i will try to get around to doing the tech tool pro surface scan (bad blocks), once i am able to create a startup usb for it.

i would say that the ssd has not failed .....

you hopefully wont have to live without spotlight for long .... i did not see improvement with beach balls of death on my mbp after disabling spotlight.

in my case i did notice that leaving iTunes (or the new Music app in my case) open overnight, while connected to my media library - which resides on an SMB share - results in bb of death after waking the computer in the mornings. perhaps my issue is related to intermittent SMB connectivity, or perhaps it's related to the iTunes (Music) app. it's a problem that's been around for a while and not quite always happening with this particular app running.

but shutting down the iTunes (or Music) app at night, then waking computer in the mornings no longer gives me bb of death. strange, because the SMB share is always mounted in macOS

tough to figure out in my case because i cannot get the computer to generate a crash report upon restart after the issue occurs.
