Mac Os Mojave freezes

Since updating to OS Mojave's my Apple mac keeps on freezing 😠. Is there any way to stop this?

Alas. So much for the easy solution.


This list (https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/apps-work-macos-mojave-3678735/) might point you to some trouble spots among the big software contenders, but it's worth noting I have a pretty good spread of many of the apps listed there (CS5, Word 2011, etc), and none of them crash or burn, nor do they contribute to any slowdowns on my Air. The trouble I was having on my Mini appears to have been due entirely to a failing HD.


That is the next thing to check, by the way. Run Disk Utility on your drives and see if any of them report problems in the SMART status (bottom left of the table of info here):

If it says anything other than "Verified", you'll need to replace the drive soon.


In addition to that, run over your Mac with a fine-tooth comb. If there's any third-party stuff loading in your system menu, or anything loading under "Login Items" with your user account, make sure it's up to date. Also, older software that was not cleanly uninstalled might have left something behind that's interfering with your system now — though tracking that down might be extraordinarily difficult.


Some third-party apps require you to disable SIP (system integrity protection) to install and run. If you don't remember ever booting to recovery and entering this command in the Terminal:


csrutil disable


…then you probably don't have any such software on your machine. Nevertheless, try loading Terminal (you don't have to reboot to do this) and enter this command:


csrutil status


If you see anything other than "System Integrity Protection status: enabled.", you'll need to boot to recovery, select Terminal from the Utilities menu, and enter this command:


csrutil enable


…Followed by a reboot. You can only enable or disable SIP from recovery. You can't do it from safe boot or even via sudo.


Among other things, SIP keeps permissions on files and folders what they ought to be. If those permissions get munged, some programs (and possibly macOS itself) might have trouble functioning.


Do you have a third-party peripheral, such as a keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, or some other hardware element? Confirm its drivers are up to date.


If you have Flash, make sure it's the most recent version. (Check it via the Flash Player item in System Preferences; if it's not there, you probably don't have Flash.) I got a system dialog today telling me the Flash updater daemon was 32-bit, not 64-bit, and so I needed to run an update (the default is for it to auto-update, but I turned that off years ago). Apps that have daemon programs like that, running in the background periodically, are likely suspects in quietly causing trouble in a largely-untraceable way.


Also, take a look at Font Book and see if there are any fonts listed that appear to be damaged or poorly coded. Problematic ones should show the yellow caution triangle next to them in the fonts list. Consider turning those off, or removing them, if there are any.


I've seen problems like software-extension incompatibility before, and it always results in unpredictable system performance somewhere. The trick always is finding out which program is the source of the problem. You've probably seen EtreCheck referenced in other posts in this forum. It might be worth running a report on your machine, seeing if there's anything noted in it, and removing the problematic software, if any.

Just some stuff to try, not sure how helpful they may be as this does sound like a bug, but:


- Safe Boot then reboot normally

- Reset SMC and NVRAM

- You can try "mount" in Terminal to see what's actually mounted and how.

- Check your network passwords in Keychain and maybe re-enter them after clearing them.

- In the Terminal you can try some ipconfig switches to try and clear anything that may be corrupted but it's not likely this will help.


Just some ideas.

when i do @ex-cop's fix (first tried it in very beginning of oct) i am fine but the recent os updates did not resolve my issues bc after i did them i tried dragging my hard drive back out of spotlights do not search area and the freezing came right back. the good news is when i dragged it back in i have been freeze free again. so if you just need a fix to get some work done def try it. its a drag not having the option to search my stuff but the other way i was as inoperable as you.

I tried pulling all my external drives out of Spotlight. It reduced the time taken before unfreezing (as I mentioned before, as long as I didn't touch any keys or make any mouse clicks) by around 50% (down to around 1.5 minutes). In my case as McAfee Real-time Scan seems to be the critical factor this would make some sense as with the Real-time Scan disabled then changes to Accessibility settings are instantaneous regardless of what I have in Spotlight...

zero, don't believe I had faulty RAM, simply did not have enough to handle the use of high-gigs apps, and or, the APFS system that started with High Sierra. I doubled the RAM from 16 G to 32 G, and doing that has stopped the freezing/re-starting. I am running Mojave 10.14.3 on my late 2015 iMac. Etrecheck and others have noted that Apple will no longer support 32bit apps in future OS. I do have 32 bit Adobe Elements apps, and a few associated with my Fujitsu scanner, and I would assume that they will update those apps to 64 bits in the near future.

i think many people jumping in the forum all saying the same thing is way unlikely


i've had a 2012 mini, a 2013, a 2015, an iphone. none of them every had a problem apple caused. (a few i caused, and one that a computer aide design app caused that the CAD company quickly fixed)


Log in as "Guest" user. see if you still have issues. If not, then your problem is /Users/you/Library, and you should look into how to deal with that without loosing your personal data that might be in there.


If you do still have issues. there are tons of articles on communities about solving freeze issues and what causes them. All of them end up caused by the user or software and very very very rarely the hardware, and never that i heard - apple's os - haven't once seen it confirmed as a cause of what is mentioned all above.


If the above didn't work, factory restore always does (if your hardware isn't damaged). BACKUP YOUR IMPORTANT FILES so that you can restore them. back them up in two different ways (time machine, and maybe thumb too). factory reset your devices. check things are now working. restore your files

I do not suggest etrecheck because it is not in App Store and users cannot say for sure if the binary does not have viruses in it, nor can Apple help them - because it is not in the App Store. i cannot find the source code i cannot tell you if the binary is repeatable from the source or might contain viruses and that worries me. at one time the etrecheck author posted source however i no longer see it available.


etrecheck is continually pushed in this forum, and it's time the author get in app store (and under it's license, and binary submitted to apple servrers), or stop pushing this "binary" in apple communities


ETRECHECK used to be free. i very much doubt Apple knows the author is continually pushing to sell a product in communities - they likely believe it is still free. (i believe they do not allow software sales pushes in their community help forums, no other company i know of would allow it)

Boot into Safe Mode, Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac, and run for a bit to see if you freeze there. Then reboot normally and check again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some system cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.

If that doesn't help download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply.


Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.


Use the Add Text button to include the report in your reply:

Before running Etrecheck also assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

i can vouch for this as well, although i'm really hesitant to post that disabling spotlight is actually the solution, because ultimately in the end it's never been confirmed that a spotlight related bug is causing this ....


either way, i dragged all my driver into the exclusion window, gave it about 5 days so far and as of now i haven't seen any beach balling or freezing.


personally, don't use spotlight myself - so it's not a huge impact. it was nice though to just type some search terms in finder and have items within my outlook email show up, but i can do that directly in outlook anyway.
