Had my XS for less than two weeks and i already have 20 plus scratches on the screen. Took 9 months to get this kind of wear on my IPhone X.
Is this what $1600 buys from apple now?
I have exactly the same issue.
I've been an iPhone user since the 3G, I've never used a screen protector on any of them and never had any significant scratches.
My XS has numerous scratches on it already; two of them fairly deep and I genuinely have no idea where they came from. I've just got back from a Genius Bar appointment where the guy who served me and the 'manager' proudly told me that the XS is the toughest iPhone screen ever, 'No' they've never used screen protectors either and they've never had an issue with scratching on their phones.
They declined to help me on the basis that the scratches were 'cosmetic' and so the system would not allow them to do anything about it.
To say I'm annoyed is an understatement.
Are you talking about the same Steve Jobs that solved an iPhone problem by telling customers that they're holding it the wrong way?
I have also only just got my iPhone and has scratches on screen .. not happy😡

Get apple care when you buy your phone and see if your carrier has a protection plan that includes it. I have tomobile and it includes AppleCare. Then it’s only $29 to replace the screen.
I've had my phone for THREE DAYS and there are TWO scratches from edge to edge. I haven't even put it in my pocket. Will be the last apple product I ever buy if they don't make it right.

Same things here. Googled it and lots of posts come up. Never had a scratch on previous phones and always looked after them. The XS clearly has a weaker screen.
You can Google all models of iPhone there has ever been and get lots of posts. Or any other model of smartphone. So does this prove that they all have weaker screens?
I have the exact same problem. A pity that apple is compromising on durability...
To avoid scratches on the iPhone XS use this simple trick: Just leave the iPhone in its original box. Don’t put on a table or worse, don’t hold it with your hands. You will avoid any scratches!
Best comparison I have is that they essentially scratch like a CD
