2008 iMac, new iPhone 7 Plus - how to transfer music?

My computer is a 2008 iMac using OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.6. I have iTunes 12.8. I have connected my brand new iPhone 7 Plus to my computer. My device is not showing up in iTunes.

I would like to be able to copy my music to my iPhone. Do you have any suggestions?

Download the current 12.8 installer for iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

Unlock your iOS device and connect it to USB.

Install iTunes from the .dmg that you've downloaded.

During the installation it should announce that a further software update is required.

Install that and iTunes should see your device.
