I just started having this issue on a trip overseas to Europe. I have:
- The Apple Watch 3 with cellular,
- The all plastic Apple Watch 1 charger,
- And a mix of 1 amp and 2 amp USB-A chargers as current sources.
After reading through this thread, I noticed that people had narrowed onto the plastic charger as the component source of the problem. Some people reported that the plastic charger would get hot while charging the watch. The chime is the sound you get when the watch connects to the charger. I wondered if the plastic watch charger receives too much current when connected to a 2 amp USB-A source? Last night I changed the charger for my watch from the 2 amp high current one that I use for my iPad to the 1 amp one that comes with the Watch and the phone. I won't say that solved the problem yet because it's only one night but my watch did not chime last night. It just charged fully and it's ready this morning.
To reiterate my thoughts, I don't think that the plastic apple watch charger can handle the extra current from the iPad style high current chargers. I use these chargers in the UK and Europe because it's easier to adapt them to UK and European electrical outlets. The extra current that these chargers provide may be overheating the charger. Especially when the watch battery is already full. This causes the charger to stop charging. When it cools down, it automatically starts charging again, causing the chime.
