Continuous chime when charging

My series 3 chimes about every minute when the battery is full and on the charger. This gets very annoying at night. I have to take the watch off the charger to stop the chime which gives me less battery for the day. This problem started with watchOS 5.0.1

I think there are two possible causes,

1. If this is the same tone you get when first connecting the charger, the charger may be disconnecting then reconnecting (at least logically if not physically), so it would be worth testing with a different USB power adapter and magnetic cable, according to what you have available. I know you have the adapter which charges your iPhone, so that would be perfect for testing.

2. Something actually wrong in the watch, either software or hardware. Software is a prime suspect because it started with the update. You could try unpairing and re-pair to your phone again to force reinstalling the Watch software. If that still doesn't work the last resort is Contact Apple Support and arrange to get it checked by Apple. Don't just skip to calling Apple Support, make sure you already tried the earlier steps because they will want to try these first.

Don't forget you can charge your watch at any time, you don't need to wait until overnight for testing the fixes!

Oh that's strange. Apple Support finally came back with a response from their engineering team. Apparently All Series 3 Aluminium's made after September 2018 exhibit this issue as it's an incompatibility between the old plastic chargers and the new ones. And the only fix is a stainless steel charger or an Apple Watch Dock.

It it may help others if you can post the exact response as a pasted email, or a scanned document, or a link to the original statement - or whatever else works. Everyone needs to see and be able to refer to this confession from Apple when seeking support.

I have an Alu cellular S4 44mm... same issue. Very strange changing behaviour. Charge chime every 15 mins. Sometimes starts discharging a little after settling at 100% for some time. I have to admit my situation is complicated by the use of third party chargers. So, I'm not sure if it's the third party charger not being S4 compatible or if this is a software issue.

I gave away the original charger, that came with, when I sold my previous watch and its cable failed (after my cat chewed it) right before I was about to ship it to the buyer. I needed a quick solution and sacrificed the S4 cable.

I then bought a third party wireless charging stand for both iPhone and Watch which came with its own QC 3.0 PSU. It was with this that I noticed the charge chime happening again and again. I then went on to buy another third party but allegedly "Made for Apple Watch" charging cable. The behaviour persisted and this was using the Apple-supplied S4 PSU (which seems identical to all previous models).

I'm really worried about the impact to the battery life here whether it's a software issue or incompatible third party chargers.

The next watchOS release isn't too far off. If it persists beyond that, then I'll need to bite the bullet and buy a charging cable direct from Apple. That way I can eliminate the third parties from being at fault here.

I'm seeing some of you have been experiencing this with Apple charging cables. Although there have been reports of some success with the use of a "stainless steel" charging cable. Apple only seems to sell one separately. Are we sure this is a "thing"?

I'm experiencing the same problem.

Last night I tried to charge the watch the first time over night, not in the evening as before. As soon as the battery was full, the watch startet chiming and turned the display on and off every 1-2 minutes.

Apple Watch Series 5 Stainless Steel, WatchOS 6.0.1, charging via Nomad Base Station Apple Watch Edition.

I got the base station on saturday so I have some days to test and to return it.

Here in the office I tested this morning the original ss charger with my series 5 and my series 4. No chiming.

According to Nomad the Base Station seems compatible ?

At home I'll continue my tests.

And now it's started happening with me. AppleWatch Series 4, watchOS 6.1. A couple of nights ago it started doing this on the circular Apple Magnetic Charging Dock, chiming over and over again after being on the charger and hitting 100%. A little while ago I gave the watch a hard reset; it's on the charger again now and isn't making a noise. I'll report.

As I've said previously OS 5.1.2 update was my problem it was fine before the update, therefore it must be a software issue for which Apple need to issue a fix.

People in some other forums are saying it was 5.0.1 when it started for them. I have no idea when mine started, but it's been months.

Regardless, I still don't see what would be happening in software that would cause it to be fine on one charger, but not on another identical charger. Very weird.

This issue just now started right after I upgraded the OS to 5.2 on an S3 watch. I've had the watch since mid-Dec.

The chiming is starts even before the battery gets to 100%, around 85% or so.

Appears to be a software issue. Have not changed the charger out for any others, just using what came with the watch from the factory.

Will try to just turn off the watch and charge it and see if that silences it, but I fear Apple has no cure based on all of the replies I'm seeing here.
