Continuous chime when charging

My series 3 chimes about every minute when the battery is full and on the charger. This gets very annoying at night. I have to take the watch off the charger to stop the chime which gives me less battery for the day. This problem started with watchOS 5.0.1

I think there are two possible causes,

1. If this is the same tone you get when first connecting the charger, the charger may be disconnecting then reconnecting (at least logically if not physically), so it would be worth testing with a different USB power adapter and magnetic cable, according to what you have available. I know you have the adapter which charges your iPhone, so that would be perfect for testing.

2. Something actually wrong in the watch, either software or hardware. Software is a prime suspect because it started with the update. You could try unpairing and re-pair to your phone again to force reinstalling the Watch software. If that still doesn't work the last resort is Contact Apple Support and arrange to get it checked by Apple. Don't just skip to calling Apple Support, make sure you already tried the earlier steps because they will want to try these first.

Don't forget you can charge your watch at any time, you don't need to wait until overnight for testing the fixes!

The new genuine Apple cable arrived. Put the Watch on without silicon night stand. Silence. No charge chiming besides the initial contact one.

Then put the charger into this cheap little silicon Night stand I bought and noticed that when firmly inserted, it added distance between the magnetic plate and the Watch. The chiming returned.

Next, I ensured the charge plate was not sunk below the rim of the silicon. Silence regained. I can now leave my Watch off theatre mode at night (I think! I might be back tomorrow withdrawing all this. Lol)

i think the moral of the story is that there must be good contact between the Watch and the charge plate. Anything creating additional distance will cause the charge re-initiation issue.

third party charging plates may not have the correct curvature, depth or something like that to fit the Watch S4 44mm. I cannot speak to previous Series or the smaller Watch size.

If you are testing for this issue, always try a bare Watch and cable only test. Exclude any stands and Watch covers/cases to ensure a perfect interface with the back of the Watch. Only if this test passes, should you re-involve modifications.

The Watch charging cable you get as an accessory from Apple is the stainless steel-shelled one. If I got a plastic one with this Watch, I don’t remember now but I also did not have the chiming issue with that either. My issue only started after I started using a third party combo wireless stand for iPhone and Watch and gave away the original, genuine Apple charge cable. I’m sure it’s no coincidence the supplier of the third party stand gave me a full refund (and got to keep it) to withdraw my negative review. It still functions well as an iPhone wireless charger. I just won’t be putting the Watch on it again.

The problem could be a poor connection between the round puck that magnetically attached to the  Watch. All new chargers come with a plastic wrapper around the puck to protect it from scratches during manufacturing and shipping. The wrapper tightly adheres to the puck and is obscure. You may not have noticed it or it may not have been removed when you first received your watch. Check to see if the wrapper is still in place. If it is remove it and see if that solves the problem.

Yes same here started at OS6 update I have a series 4 44mm alumin case. After reading that os6 don't support 3rd party charger and that was what I was using with no issue up till then, I decide I will pop into town and check out all the phone shops that sell 3rd party chargers, ended going to 4 shops and bless them all they all opened up new chargers for the test. They all failed chime came back on every charger.

So off to Birmingham it is my nearest official apple outlet. Will their chargers pass? got there explained the issue, the rep got one of their chargers big disk thing where the center flips out cost £75 (expensive) put the watch on it and off it goes charging no chime asked for the standard steel type £29 which are much better quality than the ones which come with the watch, charged for ten mins no chime. Brought it went home :) Problem solved.

Hope this help you guys. forget the plastic chargers which over heat.

Oh that's strange. Apple Support finally came back with a response from their engineering team. Apparently All Series 3 Aluminium's made after September 2018 exhibit this issue as it's an incompatibility between the old plastic chargers and the new ones. And the only fix is a stainless steel charger or an Apple Watch Dock.

Your Apple Watch should not make that sound repeatedly.

Try charging your Apple Watch again. When doing so, check that:

All plastic wrap has been removed from both ends and both sides of the charging cable (check closely on the head of the charger).

  • The back of your watch and the head of the charging cable are clean and dry (clean them with a soft, lint-free cloth).
  • The charging head is properly aligned with the back of the watch, with the concave / curved side touching it fully:
    • Some watch docks, stands, cases or protectors might hinder this.
    • If you are using any such accessories, try instead charging the watch by connecting it directly to the charging cable, without using them.
  • If possible, test by using another genuine Apple Magnetic Charging Cable (for example, by borrowing one from a friend).
  • If you are charging your watch by plugging the cable into mains power:
    • Check that the USB connector on the Apple Magnetic Charging Cable is pushed fully into the USB Power Adapter.
    • Check that the USB Power Adapter is pushed fully into the power outlet.
  • Try using different adapters from the following:
      • The Apple USB Power Adapter that was supplied with the watch.
      • An Apple iPad USB Power Adapter.
      • An Apple 5W (iPhone) USB Power Adapter.
  • An Apple-certified (MFi) third-party 5W USB power adapter.
  • Try using a different power outlet (one that is known to be working properly).
  • If no other suitable power adapters are available, test by charging via a USB port.
  • If charging via a USB port on a computer, ensure that you use a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port, the computer remains turned on and awake and the cable is plugged directly into the computer (not into, for example, an external keyboard).
  • Try removing your Apple Watch from the charger and restarting or, if necessary, force restarting it and then charging it again:
  • Restart your Apple Watch - Apple Support

If you identify an issue with a particular component (adapter, cable or watch) or if the issue otherwise persists, contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider with a view to having your product(s) checked and, if recommended, serviced:

I have exact same problem with my watch 3 and 4 on an after market charger i bought. When using apple supplied charger the problem goes away. I think it has to do with overcharging/overheating protection circuitry in the magnetic charger that cycles the charge. Some of these after market chargers are actual apple chargers that have failed in the factory due to faulty control electronics but otherwise they actually charge and work fine (except the annoying chime half way through the night). Most people don't notice it if they don't sleep too closely to the watch on charge. So, I think you either are using an after market charger or a real apple one that has just failed.

The tone is a signal that a charger has been detected and charging has started. Repeated tones suggest the device being charged has reached full capacity and stopped charging, then the battery has discharged slightly to allow charging to begin again - or the charger has disconnected then reconnected (electrically, nothing needs to move for this) so it is detected again.

The obvious test is to try different (genuine Apple, known good or new) charging accessories. Almost everyone has a spare USB power adapter around, so that part is easy to test. Spare magnetic cables are not so common but test if possible. If the problem persists with different charging accessories it is time to Contact Support and arrange a Genius Bar appointment where you will get face to face support.

I too have had this problem. It started with WatchOS5.

I used only the original Apple charger that came with the watch (the total white one). Apple even had me send the watch in for testing.

Cut to the short...nothing wrong with the watch according to the tests but as soon as the watch hit 95% it would start it's chiming.

I purchased a new charger that has a silver side and back and no more problems.

Just spoke with Apple Support. Development team only knows of this issue from a complaint submitted within a deeper forum from March 22. They did not know before this. Fix in progress.

Level 1 Advisor and their supervisor recommend no need to submit more complaints. RTA submitted and under review. Chime rings because battery full and will continue to remind until you remove watch from charger. We knew this already, duh.

Only solutions at this point, based on my opinion, are to charge battery before bedtime and remove before sleep. Or, turn off watch, which will stop chime. Disabling haptic/sounds might help but no guarantees.

FYI.....I updated my watch to OS6 and experiencing the same problem with my watch beeping after a few minutes on the charger. I wrote to the manufacturer and this is their reply (their English is a bit off but you get the idea):

If your Apple watch has updated to the latest (to OS6 ) system or you are using the newest Apple Watch 5, due to system updates influences, it will happen then disconnects, then re-connects issue, and don't worry it, it’s just normal, it will can charger your watch fully. Our engineers have solved and updated the new version and we have sent a large number of updated versions to the Amazon warehouse. If you have this problem, please contact us in time, contact seller we can send you a new version. If your watch is not updated to the latest system, the above situation will not occur.

So, check with the manufacturer of your device if you have the same issue regardless of the OS 6 update. I’m waiting for a updated version and will repost with the findings.

Lastly, although I love Anker products if your using an Anker Power IQ power supply try a non power IQ charger as the Anker unit may cycle your wireless device on/off.
