Can't access Gmail on Mail app on cellular

As long as my Apple Watch is connected with my iPhone, I can access my Gmail account through the Mail app on my Apple Watch. But, when my Apple Watch is connected to cellular and I try to check my gmail through the mail app, I get the following message: Cannot Get Mail, No connection available to retrieve messages for Gmail, Make sure to activate this account in "Apple Watch App" on your iPhone. I've gone through the setup process several times, but the problem keeps happening. Maybe this is a Gmail issue. I don't know. Any help is appreciated.

I had the same problem. The issue seems to be that the Apple Watch email app isn't a secure app by Google standards. The fix if you want to call it that is to allow less secure apps. Then it will work. Here's how you do it:

  1. Go to the Less secure apps section of your Google Account.
  2. Turn on Allow less secure apps. If you don't see this setting, your administrator might have turned off less secure app account access.
