Upgrade for OSX 10.9.5

Have a MacBook Pro 2.3 Ghz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. I looked up another prior entry with same question. It was suggested they upgrade to El Capitan. When I tried to download from Mac App store, it said this version of OS X cannot be installed on this computer. Suggestions?

The most recent was EL Capitan which failed saying OS 10.11 can not be installed. Is thier something or setting wrong with my Mac? Cannot Download El Capitan I have a MacBook Pro MD313LL/A from late 2011. I am currently running Yosemite 10.10.5. I tried downloading 10.11 El Capitan from the App Store but get a pop up saying "This version of OS X 10.11 cannot be installed on this computer." I believe my Macbook should be able to support El Capitan. Any advice on what I am doing wrong or is this not possible? Thanks in advance!

Upgrading from OS X 10.5.8 I have recently bought a second hand macbook pro mid 2009. I tried installing el capitan as the previous owner had that on the laptop. I am stuck on OS X 10.5.8 any ideas how to upgrade to El Capitan or do i need to upgrade to lion and then download El Capitan through the app store?

Your Mac, which was originally released by Apple in early 2011, was supplied with Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.6.

I am thinking you are currently running OS X 10.9 Mavericks from your post's title.

Follow these steps. Tell us exactly what step(s) succeed, fail, and error messages, etc.

If your computer is new enough to upgrade to Sierra or High Sierra, you will get that error message..

To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

macOS 10.12/10.13 (Sierra/High Sierra) requires one of the following Macs:

MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or later) Model 6.2 and higher

Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

Application Compatibility

macOS Sierra 10.12: Compatible Apps

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.
