OS Mail app not responding.

I was trying to fix email probs for 2 days, now the whole xxx app is frozen. Should I, Can I delete Mail and reinstall? I'll try shutting down Mac then restart. already done backup. Any suggestions, other than get something newer?

MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.5), late 2011

Have you used the Activity Monitor already to close Mail? Press COMMAND SPACE and type in "activity monitor" and open it. Now you can search for programs you want to close. Type "Mail" into the search bar, click the result and then click the 'x'.
