How to get rid of VPN error

I use a VPN on my phone. Recently, I got a white pop-up notification with a blue "OK" on my lock screen that says "VPN Connection An unexpected error occurred." I tapped "OK" but it doesn't go away, no matter what. This is a problem since I can't do anything on my phone, even powering off, since the notification has to go away first.

Any suggestions?
