imovie no sound on imported avi files

Hi I am new to apple so help would be welcome.

The problem is I have some video avi files that I want to import into imovie. I don't have a problem importing the video it is just there is no sound with it. when I play the clips using quicktime the audio is fine but when I import it to imovie the sound disappears completely from all the clips.

Please help.
Thanks

Hi,

iMovie does not support .avi files. You can use the free download, Handbrake, to convert the files to Mp4/AAC, that it will do by default. Then they should play in iMovie. You might want to duplicate your .avi files first, and work with the duplicates, so you can preserve your originals in the original format.

You can download Handbrake from this link:
