Sound gone on MacBook Air

My MacBook Air has no volume and it is not the earphone jack. The red light in the earphone jack is not on and it is not an option in the output section. I have however tried putting in the earphones and removing them several times just incase this is the cause.

When accessing the sound option from system preferences there are no output options except my two apple tvs. I have done the command, option, p, r reset with no luck. There is a light that very quickly flashes though when trying to do this reset. It will not turn back on until I let go of these keys and then press the power button. The computer then works great without sound.

Any other options? Is it possible there has been damage to my internal speakers? All other aspects of the computer are working great. Any other reset options? That visual of the speaker with the circle and line through it underneath has come up on computer. I also have updated computer with all available updates.

Hello sarahfromsechelt,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to get sound through your speakers or the headphone jack on your MacBook Air. You can figure out if unexpected behavior is related to a user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

Next, run the built-in Apple Diagnostic to see if this test shows any issues with your MacBook Air:

Cheers!
