The file name from my iPhone is IMG_3339.
The file name after exporting from Photos is something like 2018-07-23 11.31.22
How can I get Photos to retain the same name assigned in my iPhone. Finding a picture with the name assigned by Photos is difficult to nearly impossible.

When you export from photos, you can select a file naming preset.
In the File > Export dialog you can select one of four options for the file name.
Use the option "Use File Name". Then the file name used for exporting will be the same name as the name of the original in your Photos Library.
If this filename is not the original filename set by your iPhone, an external editor may have created a new filename for the edited version or the filename changed during the transfer to the Mac. How are you transferring the photos from your iPhone to the Mac?
Unfortunately, the problem seems to occur on import into photos. The first list is how the names appear as I airdrop them from my iPhone to my iMac. The second picture is how they are listed in Photos. The simple title of "IMG_3037' is gone.
If it is an import setting, I am in trouble as all the originals are gone.....
