Excel spreadsheets and Numbers

I have opened many EXCEL spreadsheets using NUMBERS with great success but recently I am being presented with something that looks like this:

Any idea what's causing this?

What extension does your downloaded file have?

If you have Excel then you can open the downloaded file in Excel and Save As (hold down option key and choose File > Save As ... from the menu) and choose a standard format .xlsx or .xls format that Numbers is more like to be able to open.

In fact, there are Microsoft Office (mso-displayed-decimal-separator) resources used in it that suggest it was an MS Excel file saved, or exported to HTML.

Microsoft has added even more features to Excel 2019 that will stress Number's Excel 2013 partial compatibility to the test when opening these newer documents.
