If you make a mistake changing the battery you will lose everything. But no, the storage in the iPhone is non-volatile. But to guarantee you don't lose anything why don't you just back it up first?

Replacing a battery is definitely not straightforward; it requires tools that you probably don't have (such as a pentalobe screwdriver, two sizes of Phillips screwdrivers and a spurger), and there are a couple of really tiny parts that are easy to lose, difficult to reinstall and that will render the phone inoperable if they get lost. And if you don't remove the battery plug from the logic board correctly you can easily break the socket or the board. Get the installation instructions from ifixit.com, as they cover all of the areas where you can make a mistake. You are also working on a phone that is essentially so old it is almost unusable, because it won't run any newer versions of the operating system and it also won't run most current apps.

If it was me with an iPhone 4 that needed a new battery...I would invest my money in one of those powerbanks, rather than risking my phone. Upgrading to a newer phone would also be a better option.

Replacing anything in an iPhone is a delicate process and it can easily go wrong. I wouldn't do it with my own device. I do Chromebook and laptop/desktop repair every day, and the likelihood of damage there is much smaller.
