iMac running slow, safari crashing

Hi Community

My iMac is running very slow and safari is often crashing. I'm a novice as to where to start to fix these things and last time I tried I lost my iTunes library.

Is anyone able to offer some suggestions on what might be wrong with my iMac? we're running macOS High Sierra 10.13.6, computer is about 3 years old. I run virtue box so we can use MYOB Account Right through a windows system. I paid for a computer guy come and look at the only thing he could suggest is that it might have a hard-drive fault, he said that you can't really fix an iMac hard drive and it's best to buy a new iMac which I don't know how to tell if that is correct or not. I ran an Etre report as below.

Thanks in advance

Bree

I think the failing hard drive is the most probable answer. It is replaceable, but moderately difficult and involves a couple of special tools, so you will probably want professional help with that. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+27-Inch+EMC+2639+Hard+Drive+Replacement/ 19643.

Disk Utility will only tell you that an HDD has already failed, not that it's failing, so try one of these in trial mode to see what they have to say:

A Troubleshooting Procedure that may Fix Problems with macOS El Capitan or Later

You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.

Be sure to back up your files before proceeding if possible.

  1. Shutdown the computer, wait 30 seconds, restart the computer.
  2. Disconnect all third-party peripherals.
  3. Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM
  4. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  5. Reset your Startup Disk and Sound preferences.
  6. Start the computer in Safe Mode. Test in safe mode to see if the problem persists, then restart normally. Also, see Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support and Playing Safe- what does Safe mode do?.
  7. Use the Apple Hardware Test to see if there is any hardware malfunction. How to invoke and interpret the Apple hardware tests - CNET.
  8. Repair the disk by booting from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  9. Repair permissions on the Home folder: Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder.
  10. Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button under Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
  11. Download and install the OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update or 10.12.6 Combo Update or Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Combo Update as needed.
  12. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.
  13. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
  3. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
  4. Set the Format type to APFS (for SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  7. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

If your hard drive is failing you can add an external HD that's connected by Thunderbolt or USB and operate from that as your boot drive. Just clone your internal HD to the external and set it as your boot drive. The boot time may be a bit slower but not terribly so. I have an external SSD connected by USB that I boot from occasionally and once it's booted up I don't notice any performance differences.

Then if you get a new Mac at some time in the future you can easily transfer your files from the external to the new Mac and use the external as additional storage.

An excellent source of external HDs is MacSales.com (OWC).

Actually, it's not running in the background, it's simply loaded in order to watch to see if the app is being trashed so it can offer to completely uninstall itself. The OP is using it in passive mode, only running manual scans and benefits are in the eye of the beholder.

In addition to getting rid of the torrent software., also uninstall ClamXav. It is running in the background and providing no benefit.

Old versions of Fitbit software can be problematic. Yours is four years old. if you do not use it any more, delete it. If you need it, update it.

System Software:

macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 (17G65)

Time since boot: About 18 days

Restarting your computer about every five days will help clear unneeded temp files and caches that can build up. 18 days isn't terrible, but if you get rid of the useless software, then restart, then run EtreCheck again, you may find a better perforamce benchmark that will not have you running around shopping for a new hard drive.
