i somehow got the playsearchnow malware set to my homepage in safari. I have removed the extension, could not find an app to delete, searched the Library/launch applications, ran malwarebytes and removed what it found. Deleted the trash/history. All the steps I can find here for how to get rid of it. It's not on my computer but I still can't change my homepage back to normal. Any ideas?

Click View in Mac App Store button and then “Get” button underneath EtreCheck logo.
Download, install, click “Open’ in the dialog and run it.
Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” .
Paste it into the reply.
Please use the manual method or Malwarebytes. Do not download any other programs.

maybe it has created an entry in Profiles. Try to delete it too.
