Why does selecting LTE block most incoming calls?

I’m writing this after I ”fixed” the problem, hence the question.


Ever since I went into settings and just switched from 3G to LTE on my iPhone 7 I had the problem of not receiving incoming calls almost completely. Very few calls would come through, but it seemed to allow specific numbers. For a month I tried changing Bed Time App and similar Do Not Disturb settings along with Blocked Contacts settings to no avail. I even upgraded to iOS 12 hoping it was software but with the same issue. I’m sure I’ve missed a lot of customer calls that could easily amount to over $500 in lost business!


I found the workaround on this community to switch from LTE to one of the slower networks (3G or 2G), but I wouldn’t call that ”a fix” but a compromise.


Is this about the phone or the carrier? I want to be able to use LTE on my iPhone.

I just researched that the LTE technology is not for voice but for data, and that carriers have to first ping your LTE phone to tell it to switch back to a voice network like 3G or 2G in order to take the incoming voice call, where if that process takes too long or is poorly implemented it times-out and the caller gets dumped one way or another, and you miss the call.


The carrier has to handle iPhone LTE voice call switching correctly to minimum standards to be certified with Apple for LTE and for specific models of iPhone. And that is why Apple did not roll out LTE to all countries for all iPhone models right away.


Also, from Apple’s certified carriers and countries list for my model iPhone (iPhone 7 A1660), my carrier is NOT listed in my country as a certified Apple iPhone LTE network provider for my specific model phone.


So, LTE for me is only a fast data option when I can afford not to receive calls. Otherwise, 3G for both voice and data at a slower speed.
