iCloud and internet accounts broken

For the better part of a year my contacts and continuity features that use iCloud have been broken.

Under my settings in iCloud my account doesn't show that I'm signed in. It asks to sign in and after I do, it says " **iCloud account** is already signed in to iCloud. To use this Apple ID as your primary iCloud account, delete it from Internet Accounts and sign in again."

After going to my internet account under setting none of my email accounts or iCloud accounts show up and I'm asked to sign set up my accounts. If I set it up I always get " Already signed in as **iCloud account**. This iCloud account already exists. "

I'm not too sure what to do to get all my internet accounts to work again.

Currently using a 13" MacBook Pro from 2013 on MacOS 10.14

Any way I can get my setting back to normal?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), macOS Mojave (10.14)

Eureka! We've found a solution! It seems the cause of the issue is actually a corruption of the icloud database on the computer. To repair, copy and paste this command into Terminal, but do not hit enter before closing all other applications running on your computer. Once everything else is closed, go ahead and hit enter. You may be prompted to enter your administrator password because it is a sudo command, so go ahead and do that (but keep in mind that when you type your password into terminal, the text cursor will not move to show how much you have typed already). A few moments later, your computer should restart. Once it's open, you should be able to sign into iCloud and Internet Accounts as normal.

Here is the command:

sudo -v ; killall -9 accountsd com.apple.iCloudHelper ; defaults delete MobileMeAccounts ; mkdir ~/Library/Accounts/Backup ; mv ~/Library/Accounts/*.sqlite* ~/Library/Accounts/Backup/ ; killall -9 accountsd com.apple.iCloudHelper ; sudo reboot

I just ran it myself and can finally use my computer as normal--let me know if it works for you as well!

~Special thanks to the Apple Support team for working with me to find the issue and providing the command to fix it--I couldn't have found it without them.

So I have no idea why this is happening but my wife had the same issue on her MacBook Air and contacted Apple to to figure out how to do fix it. She directed the tech to this thread and after a couple of failed attempts, this was the solution that worked with no additional issues:

  1. Open Terminal
  2. Type defaults delete MobileMeAccounts
  3. Press enter
  4. Log into iCloud thru Internet Accounts in settings. The already signed in message should be gone once you sign in.
  5. Go to iCloud thru Settings. Now it should show your Apple ID on the top
  6. Type your password. It should work now.
  7. Check all the boxes again.
  8. Done

Hopefully this works for you as well. At least the Apple tech knows there are other people with the same issue.

I have the same problem. "defaults delete MobileMeAccounts" command removed the 'is already signed in to iCloud. To use this Apple ID as your primary iCloud account, delete it from Internet Accounts and sign in again' message but didn't resolve the main problem. Now, when I'm trying to Log into my iCloud account - there is no any message at all and I'm not logged in.

I've tried to restart, but it didn't help as well.

I've been having the same problem. Finding this thread, I tried using terminal to delete MobileMeAccounts, but it just said:

Domain (MobileMeAccounts) not found.

Defaults have not been changed."

When I went back to settings to try again, the alert had disappeared, but...it didn't do anything, almost like the sign in was cancelled, or I had signed out again (which I hadn't). I tried restarting my computer, re-installing the operation system, deleting various files, etc., but nothing's actually fixed the problem. I'm trying to reset my icloud password to see if that makes a difference, but it won't go through for a few days.

Has anyone else had this issue and resolved it?

I haven’t managed to fix it yet, I’m currently working with apple support to find the root of the issue—it seems to be causing several other weird bugs as well, in my case. I’ll update here once I learn more, but in the meantime, you should know (if your problem is the same as mine):

-while facetime and imessage work fine while you’re still signed out, you shouldn’t sign out of either or you’ll get the same problem there.

-iTunes and App Store still seem to be working fine—the only strange thing I’ve found there is that while I can sign in and out of them just fine, if I try to sign in through system pref > icloud while signed out of iT and/or AS, it automatically signs me back into iT and AS, while still not showing any change on the system pref window. I’ve been told this is one of the weirdest parts about the problem; the sign in for iTunes and App Store is supposed to be completely separate from the icloud/internet accounts sign in.

-As some of you have probably found out, reinstalling the OS does not work...neither does updating everything. It can never be the easy fix, can it?

—If you haven’t already, I highly recommend downloading Malwarebytes and scanning your computer for adware; while it may not fix the problem (unless you’re luckier than I), I found that some of the seemingly related issues I was having disappeared once I scanned my computer and quarantined a virus app called “Booking” or “launchdaemon”. For those who don’t know, Malwarebytes is the only third-party anti-virus app that Apple recommends (as of a few months ago, at least), and is completely safe and FREE. There is a paid version as well, but the only difference is that with the paid, you can schedule scans for different times whereas with the free, you need to scan manually (which is super easy).

Anyway, I have work today/tomorrow (Friday) so I probably won’t be around much then, but I’m supposed to hear back from the senior advisor I’m working with about some logs an engineer is going through by Saturday. Hopefully we’re able to find a solution soon so we can save you the time and trouble we’ve spent experimenting and testing so far.
