Which iPad is right for my 8 year old 2018

Currently my son uses my old iPad 2 (64GB). Action games (Lego, Pokemon) freeze up and crash and he is limited to how much content he can download to watch offline. I am not sure if this is due to the age of the iPad or the low GB. Is the new 2018 iPad enough GB for gaming and downloading movies or should I buy the 10.5 iPad pro with 512GB? I'm less concerned about spending more now than I am with having an iPad he has outgrown in a year or two.

Whether you get 512 GB or just 128GB. Storage management is not something you can't escape. Eventually even 512GB will fill up. But just because they are filled up, does not mean they cannot be cleared up as well. Storage space, can be cleared, and a filled up storage space does not in any way indicate outgrowing of the device.

The iPad 2 is 8 year old hardware at this point. Crashes may be indeed due to lack of storage space, though the age of the device may also be a factor. One way to find out if its a storage space issue, is to delete some content from the iPad and make space. If still crashes with some free space available, then the iPad may have other issues. You do want to make sure there's at least 10% of free space at all times. For a 64GB iPad, that should be around 6 to 8GB of free space.

You can buy all the storage you want, but if you don't do normal storage management everything can get filled up. Downloading stuff without regard will eventually fill up even the largest storage capacities.

Without any storage management even 512 can be filled up pretty fast.

If you go to Settings->General->Storage and iCloud Usage you can see what is taking up the most space and deal with it.

A 64 GBs iPad no matter how old is a respectable amount of storage.

Do you know how much storage is left on the device.

An iDevice needs to maintain an absolute minimum of between 2-3 GBs of free data storage space for the iPad to continue operating properly.

An iPad 2 has very low internal RAM, so you cannot have a lot of bsckground running apps and any background running apps running that go out to the Internet to constantly update.

Try all of these tips and leave each tip active together. Do not simply try every tip individually, expecting just one tip to be a performance “cure all”.

Many of these tips are designed to work together to improve overall iOS/iDevice performance.

Good Luck!

In addition, if you still want to consider a new iPad, if you want to save some cash, your 8-year old son doesn't need an expensive iPad Pro.

You could purchase the less expensive 128 GBs storage, 2018, 6th gen 9.7 inch iPad that has support for the $99 Apple Pencil

The 128 GBs storage model in WiFi ONLY is $429 U.S.D.. OR the128 GBs Wifi AND Cellular model is $549 U.S.D..

Don't forget to purchase two-year extended AppleCare+ with the new device.
