Can I use my old sim card?

I am about to switch to an unlocked apple phone and I'd like to have my same number and everything. I was told that if I put my old SIM from a prepaid AT&T account into my new phone it won't work. I just don't want to go out and buy another SIM card. And I don't want to buy a new phone if it's just going to break. Has anyone tried this?
