can i disable safe boot mode?

Hello

Many people seem to need info about how to get into safe mode.

I need to avoid the use of the "maj." key at boot.

I’d like to use an old Macbook pro (13" mid 2010) which keyboard remained very drunk ever since it tasted some high grade alcoholic beverage.

As a result it is suffering dyslexia and is only capable to SHOUT.

I plan to connect it to some external screen and keyboard but as the "maj." key is virtually depressed it is entering safe mode at every boot.

Disconnecting the keyboard from the motherboard is not an option as i’m pretty sure it would also disable the power button. I could just keep using the sleep mode but then if i endure a crash i will have to open the book to force boot the motherboard.

I wonder if trashing/hiding a few kexts would disable the keyboard without losing the switch button and the USB keyboard.

I will probably end up in savage experimenting but if anybody have crossed a drunk macbook and managed to bring it back on the walking line, i may avoid some trouble.

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), Ext. SSD boot/Int. home folder & VM

If you can boot into single use mode (command s) at boot, from the command line you can reset boot arg to get out of the the stuck SafeBoot:

sudo nvram boot-args=""

Single USER mode:

or from Recovery to get to terminal

Hi Leroy

It was not the keyboard, i stupidly did not type the sudo command thinking that i was already superuser being logged as root.

I’m a terminal fan, but i look at it as a magic wand: i learned a limited number of spells, got them from trusted sources (like here) and allways keep an eye on the book to avoid unwanted/monstrous/lethal results.

Spell casting does not leave place for improvisation, and i prooved it to myself again.

I would not have thought possible to "ban" safe mode with a boot argument, thus i’m opening a brand new chapter in my spell book !

These are very valuable lines of code, considering the cost of a top case replacement !

Leroy, thanks a million for sharing some wizardry tips at the speed of light.

Those lines are a kind of "Marcel Proust’s madeleine" to me. They reminded me that the very first command lines i entered were meant to reset nvram, at the good old times of Open Firmware boot, and that 3 lines litterally resurrected my G4 powerbook.

I’m happy to have had such a rapid answer as i searched in vain before. Too many results came up to be related to "accessing safe boot mode" despite my "disable", "avoid" or "forbid" keywords.

I’m french and could not find better words for that purpose.

For the fun, and the unlucky one who might bump into a similar problem:

My two first lines of keyboard type the same letters, azerty spells QSDFGH, so i’m lucky enough to have two "S" keys to enter single user mode.

Once connected i was typing highercase obviously.

I was not sure to be allowed to SHOUT command lines, but pressing the locking key twice on my usb keyboard took me back to lowercase.

Then, if on a french azerty kb you may type :
sudo nvrq, boot=qrgs-%%
I remain worried that the keyboard degradation goes into "ghost typing" though, i’ve seen it before on other machines.

That would bring me back to my kext quest... the later the better.

Thanks again Leroy.

Thanks a lot for fast reply.

I tried it from my admin account with no luck.

I rebooted in SU mode to get rooted but then my french keyboard may have interfered.

Typing in QWERTY is ok until i reach the "", which are curved, and thus not the same ascii, i guess.

If that is the case, there is an alternate command from terminal:

sudo nvram -d boot-args

Strangely enough i still boot in safe mode and have to enter SU mode to type this code again once in a while...

Your options are limited—

You can try again resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

From Terminal:

sudo nvram boot-args=""

or

sudo nvram -d boot-args
