I want to play music from my mac book pro to a mcintosh preamp

I would like to play music from my Mac book pro through a usb a to usb b cable connected to my mcintosh preamp. The preamp is a C47. Does anyone have experience connecting their laptop to home stereo. I have the cable and connected the system but the MacBook won't send music to the desired output. Any help is appreciated
